A new game in the Thunderstruck franchise does not come about very often, and it’s been more than 11 years since the developer released its now-legendary Thunderstruck II. The follow-up is so crammed full of features that it’s bursting at the seams, and it feels like a single thunderbolt could explode the whole thing.

Explosive wins are certainly possible at different stages of the game, not least in the 1-spin Wildstorm bonus round. The Thor wild can land on any reel, and it comes with a multiplier of 2x or 5x in the base game. The Thor multiplier wild can also land fully stacked, and it’s the highest paying symbol in the game by far. Land 5 across a payline to win 200x your stake.

The Lightning orb cash symbols can land anywhere as well, and you need at least 6 in view to trigger the Link&Win feature. This is yet another name for the classic Streak Respins feature, and all the triggering symbols become sticky with 3 respins awarded.

Any new cash orbs that land will also become sticky, and this resets the respins tally to 3 again. There are 4 rows to unlock in this Link&Win feature, and you need to land 15, 20, 25, and 30 cash orbs to unlock rows 5, 6, 7 and 8, respectively. The feature only ends when you run out of respins, or the whole grid is filled with cash orbs. Your total winnings are then summed up.

In addition to cash orbs, you can also land blue, green, and yellow jackpot orbs during the Link&Win feature. These correspond to the Mini, Minor, and Major Jackpots, worth 25x, 50x, and 150x your stake, respectively. Fill the whole grid with cash/jackpot orbs, and you win the Mega Jackpot worth 15,000x your stake.

The Mjolnir hammer is the scatter, and you trigger the Bonus Round when at least 3 lands anywhere on the same spin. You get a 3x, 20x, or 200x scatter win upfront, when you land 3, 4, or 5 scatters, respectively, and there are 5 bonus round options to unlock. The first 4 are unlocked chronologically, while the fifth feature is unlocked in a different way.

Review Summary

Thunderstruck Wild Lightning comes across as one of these overblown superhero productions that seem to be the only thing Hollywood does well these days. It’s full of special effects and superficial drama, but you’re left feeling as empty as after a fast-food meal once the whole thing is over. Don’t get us wrong, there is plenty of entertainment to be found here for sure, but it’s not quite the Thunderstruck 2 follow-up we dreamed about.

The Link&Win feature hardly needs yet another “trademarked” name, and it seems artificially bolted on just to cram as much as possible into the game. Yet, this is where the 15,000x potential is most likely to be cracked, while all those resources could have been allocated to the bonus rounds instead. The Wildstorm feature offers a thrilling shot at winning 8,000x your stake, while the remaining features are more moderate and ordinary in comparison.
