Reel Star Review
You may “never be a star”, as the youngest of the Ylvis brothers sings, but you can certainly be a Reel Star! That seems to be the idea behind this release. The presentation is fairly standard for a disco fruit machine installment, and you get blinking lights in the spacious backdrop.
It’s clear that the developer hasn’t gone overboard with creativity and innovation for this assignment, but fans of classic slots should be pleased. You can upgrade your instant prizes up to 8,000x your stake at best, which is way above many competitor releases. The bonus round comes with a random combo of spins, multiplier, and moving wilds, and it also comes with a pretty decent hit rate of 1 in 142 spins.
Reel Star Slot Features
The classic fruit machine symbols pay between 2.5 and 15 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins, and the Wild symbol pays 50x your stake for the same. Wilds also step in for pay symbols to help complete wins, like wilds usually do.
You can land Star and Upgrade symbols on all 5 reels, and the star symbols award instant prizes. More specifically, you win 1x, 3x, 15x, 50x, or 250x your stake for 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 stars in view, respectively. Each Upgrade symbol in view at the same time doubles the star prize you win. It’s possible to land 5 upgrade symbols together with 5 stars, and this cracks the 8,000x potential.
You need 3 scatters on reels 2, 3, and 4 to trigger the Bonus Round, and you get a randomized combination of free spins, win multiplier, and moving wilds. You can get 5, 7, 8, 10, 12, or 15 free spins, a win multiplier of x1, x2, x3, x4, or x5, and 2, 3, 4, 5, or 7 moving wilds, to be precise. The moving wilds move to a random position per free spin, and regular wilds, scatters, and upgrade symbols are not present during the feature.
The 200 Spins Reel Star Slot Experience
You get a decent taste of the base game, before we trigger the bonus round around the 1-minute mark. The upfront extras spin gave us 10 free spins, a x1 multiplier (thanks a lot!), and 2 moving wilds. The feature plays out for the remainder of the almost 3-minute highlights video, and you can check it all out for yourself by hitting the play button below.
Review Summary
We get that this is an exclusive release, so Reel Star will have a somewhat limited audience. However, this game does not come across as something we would’ve guessed came from a solid developer. The pace is kind of slow even with the turbo switched on, and there is an annoying clicking sound both from the reels themselves and the spin button (which you will most likely hammer to get things going).
We doubt the developer put their A-team on this job, and the glossy disco/fruit presentation is hardly something we haven’t seen a thousand times before. Being able to upgrade instant jackpots is somewhat innovative though, and the 8,000x top prize is solid. The bonus round comes with tried and tested extras, but it’s a bit annoying that the minimum win multiplier you can get isn’t x2, but x1 (aka no multiplier at all!).
