The Cossack culture has been known to produce fierce and fearless warriors, and you get to meet 4 of them in this release. Of Sabers and Monsters is basically a spinoff from a popular range, and the 6x4 grid is set in a yellow wheat field with a black raven on the left-hand side. Clouds drift across the sky in the background, and the 4 heroes are battling monsters in all stages.
It’s not a straight up clone of any releases, but it’s not too far off either. The rage meters have been replaced by Ardent Meters, but they work the same way. You fill them up to get Ardent Respins where characters turn sticky wild if they defeat the monsters. The regular bonus round gives you more of the same, while the Tempest feature comes with 4 Ardent Mode heroes for payouts up to 14,755x your stake.
Of Sabers and Monsters Slot Features
The 4 premium character symbols pay between 1 and 1.5 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins, and Wild symbols step in for pay symbols to help complete wins. Wilds play a central part in all stages of the game, and we’ll take a closer look at all the features below.
When you land a win with a character symbol, it adds Focus Points to the Focus Meter of that character. You start with a half full Focus Meter for one of the heroes, and each meter needs 100 points to be filled. A full meter awards the Ardent Respins feature for each character.
The character symbols will battle monsters in the Ardent Respins feature, but only on the 4 middle reels. The hero character turns into a sticky wild if he wins the battle, and the full focus meter symbol always wins his/her battles. The feature ends when no new battles are won, or if you manage to fill the grid with sticky wilds.
The Skirmish feature triggers when any of the 4 middle reels are filled with premium symbols. You will then see all character symbols on the 4 middle reels battle the monsters, and they turn wild if they win also in this feature.
Reel 6 can land a Feather Symbol once in a while, and this awards a random prize between 4x and 200x your stake in the base game. You can also win 8 to 20 free spins or 8 Tempest free spins. The Feather can appear in the bonus rounds as well, and this awards 4x to 200x cash prizes, 2 to 4 extra spins, a randomly placed wild reel or an extra wild. In the tempest bonus round, you get the cash prize or 2 to 4 extra spins.
The Bonus Round triggers from 3, 4, 5 or 6 scatters, and this gives you 8, 12, 16 or 20 free spins, respectively. You can gamble for extra spins, up to 20 at best, but this is optional as you can lose the whole feature. You get 1 random extra to bring with you into the feature, and this can be an ardent mode symbol, 1 to 2 extra spins, a random sticky wild reel or a sticky wild. It can also be extra feather symbols that are added to the reel strips of reel 6. Characters turn into sticky wilds when they defeat the monsters on the 4 middle reels.
The Tempest Bonus Round can trigger from the Feather symbol only, and this awards 8 Tempest Free Spins. All characters are in Ardent Mode for the duration of this feature, which means they always win the battle and turn into sticky wilds on the 4 middle reels. Non-UK players, and anyone eligible, can buy either of the bonus rounds for 80x and 500x your stake.

Review Summary
We enjoyed the scenery and the mysterious vibe hanging over this release, and if you want to really get in the mood you can warm up with the epic Cossack’s Song from Red Army Choir. We are a tad disappointed that hasn’t taken this opportunity to experiment with some brand new core features, however. This could’ve spawned a whole new series, but instead it comes across as a spinoff.
The Cossack characters are nicely crafted though, which adds a personality and charisma to the game, but the Feather feature takes a bit too long to play out each time (why not allow players to click to cut to the chase). You get plenty of monster battling and sticky wilds in all stages, and not least in the Tempest bonus round. You get no multipliers like in, but with 4,096 win ways the 14,755x potential certainly seems achievable.
