It’s less “boring” than other similar slots in that sense, but the base game is still stripped of features. You can expect plenty of dead spins and smaller wins between bonus round triggers, and the big twist in this game is that you get an extra 6th reel unlocked during free spins. A special expanding symbol is chosen up front, as usual, and the extra reel means that you can win up to 7,500x your stake instead of the “usual” 5,000x your stake.

The premium symbols pay between 50 and 500 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins, and they pay between 100 and 750 x your stake for 6 of a kind wins. The latter is only possible when the 6th reel is unlocked in the bonus round. The Dragon Egg Wild symbol substitutes for any pay symbol to help complete and/or improve wins, and it serves double duty as the scatter symbol in this game.

Merlin is usually depicted as a typical wizard with a long white beard, but you get to meet a younger version of him in this game. Merlin: Journey of Flame comes with excellent visuals, and you get some action commentary from the wizard as well. The base game isn’t all that exciting, which is many times the case with the ‘book slot’ genre, but you can still land decent payouts with or without the help of the wild symbols.
The only twist is the extra reel you get in the bonus round, but this is hardly something we haven’t seen before with this mechanic. Still, an extra reel means more expanding special symbols can appear, and it also means that the max win is a bit higher than the “norm” for these kinds of games. Up to 7,500x your stake is possible, which is hard to complain about, and Merlin: Journey of Flame is therefore a solid alternative to other popular slots.
