Candy Corner Review
Candy Corner offers a fresh take on the sweets theme. The backdrop features a candy house and lollipop, letting the corner modifiers and sweet symbols stand out. The game takes place on a 7x7 grid, where the 4 corner positions hold special modifiers.
The pay symbols are sweets like donuts, cakes, and fruits. The Cluster Pays system requires 6 to 30+ matching symbols connected horizontally and/or vertically to win. The payouts range from 0.2x to 1x your stake for 6-symbol cluster wins, escalating to 10x to 200x for 30+ cluster wins.
The corner positions randomly land up to 4 modifier symbols, each offering a feature to enhance your winnings. The modifiers include up to 8 random wilds, big wilds of up to size 5x5, instant cash prizes up to 50x, or additive win multipliers up to x100. These features, with the tumbling wins mechanic, can lead to winning streaks.
Candy Corner is a high volatility game. While you can expect to win something around every 3rd spin on average, the big wins may require patience. The top-tier RTP is above average, but lower RTP settings are possible. The bonus round guarantees at least 2 corner modifiers per spin, with the golden version offering an additional modifier. The max win of 10,000x your stake is a tempting prize, with a hit rate of 1 in 17,123,288 spins.
Candy Corner Features
Candy Corner shines with its corner modifier features, and tumble wins keep your cluster winning streaks going. There are 2 bonus rounds, so let’s check it all out!
Tumble Feature
Winning symbols pop off the grid per winning cluster, triggering the tumble mechanic feature. This allows both existing and new symbols to drop down to fill the gaps, and this repeats as long as you keep landing new winning clusters. The tumbles go on until you land a non-winning cascade.
Modifier Corners
The 4 corner positions are framed and empty, and these positions land special modifier symbols randomly. You can get only one modifier symbol of the same kind during the base game, but all 4 corners may land unique modifier symbols. These work as follows:
- Direct Money Award - delivers an instant cash prize between 2x and 50x your stake.
- Win Multiplier - boosts all wins on the current spin by x2 to x100.
- Add Wilds - a cannon shoots 2 to 8 wilds onto random positions on the grid.
- Big Wild - adds a wild symbol of size 2x2, 3x4, 4x4, or 5x5 on the grid.
Candy Corner Free Spins
The Bonus Round triggers from 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 scatters in view, awarding 6, 8, 10, 12, or 14 free spins, respectively. You can get up to 4 of the same modifier symbols in each corner on the same free spin, although only 2 instances of the Big Wild symbol can appear at the same time. You can also land extra free spins symbols awarding up to +5 extra spins.
In the regular bonus round, you’re guaranteed to land 2+ modifier symbols of any type per free spin. However, if you trigger the Golden Bonus Round, which happens randomly, a modifier symbol is chosen before the free spins start. In addition to the 2 random modifier symbols that are guaranteed, the chosen modifier symbol is also guaranteed per free spin. The exception is if you get the Extra Spins modifier symbol as the chosen one, as this awards +10 extra free spins with 2 guaranteed random modifiers per free spin as usual.
Candy Corner Bonus Buy (not UK)
Eligible players can check the Bonus Buy menus. The regular feature costs 100x the stake, while the Golden Bonus Round comes with a price tag of 250x the stake. Both features trigger with at least 3 scatters on the spin that follows. The bonus round hit frequency in Candy Corner is 1 in 397.7 spins. This is below average.

Our Verdict
It's refreshing to see a less sugar-laden candy world than most similar releases, even if the backdrop feels like a "cut and paste" job. Sweets-themed games are difficult to make in any other way, so the real innovation lies in the gameplay mechanics. Candy Corner excels here, thanks to the corner modifiers. The visuals of the modifiers, like the cannons shooting wild symbols and massive big wilds, are captivating and add to the overall enjoyment.
However, the game's highly volatile nature means that corner modifiers don't appear as frequently in the base game as one might hope. This, combined with the abundance of dead spins or small wins, can lead to a frustrating experience. Longer tumble sequences with multiple modifiers are thrilling when they happen, but sadly infrequent. An Ante Bet option is sorely missed.
The bonus round is where the corner modifiers truly shine, with 2+ guaranteed per free spin and the potential for up to 4 of the same modifier. This can result in explosive wild wins, multiplier boosts, and combinations of both. The even rarer golden bonus, with 3 guaranteed modifiers per spin, is even more rewarding and fun. However, the close to 1 in 400 spins hit rate can take a toll.
Overall, Candy Corner has a winning concept. However, some fine-tuning might be a good idea in potential follow-ups. I would love to see future installments with a tad lower volatility and more frequent base game modifier action to balance out the experience. That being said, the corner modifiers in their current form worked great in the bonus rounds, although getting there can take a while.
