Book of Raider Review
It’s always interesting to see what a new developer can do with the well-established 'Book of ...' mechanic concept, and this 'book slot' debut is actually not too shabby. Book of Raider comes with the standard chosen expanding symbol bonus round though, but the developer has included some innovative extras to spice up the usual ‘desert walk’ base game.
The ancient Egypt theme is done in a somewhat different way as well, without being revolutionary. The Royal League Jackpot Game is the big twist, giving you regular opportunities to land prizes up to 10,000x your stake as you grind along. Tokens are collected to this end, awarding Super Spins with a double Royal League chance. Boost Mode increases jackpot game chances, but the price you pay is a lower RTP and increased stake.
Book of Raider Slot Features
The premium symbols pay 40 to 500 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins, with the leather-hatted Explorer as the top-tier symbol. The Book Wild serves double duty as a scatter, which is not unusual for these types of games, and as a wild it steps in for regular pay symbols to help complete winning combinations.
You can turn on/off the Boost Mode feature between base game spins, and it increases the price per spin when switched on. The benefit is a higher chance of triggering the Royal League Jackpot Game, and you get it quite often with this ante bet turned on.
The Royal League Feature triggers at random times, and it plays out on a 49 gemstones grid. The gemstones are arranged in patterns of different colors, and the colors correspond to the 4 jackpots on display on the left-hand side. One gemstone is highlighted by a marker as the feature starts, and then you’ll roll a pair of dice.
The dice can trigger the Collect function, or it can move the gemstone marker to another gemstone position. The feature goes on until you roll the Collect symbol, and you then win the jackpot that corresponds to the gemstone the marker has settled on. The Royal League feature can only be triggered from the base game, and the jackpots pay 10x, 100x, 1,000x or 10,000x your stake.
Some symbols land with tokens attached during base game play, and all tokens are collected in the Token Meter seen up to the left. You need to collect a total of 100 Tokens to trigger the Golden Spins feature, but you start with pre-collected Tokens in your very first session. When the Golden Spins feature triggers, you’ll select 1 of 3 different items on the screen.
This awards 8, 12 or 16 Golden Spins, but keep in mind that Golden Spins are not free. You will thus pay for each spin like a regular base game spin, but the big difference is that your chances of triggering the Royal League Jackpot Game is increased as long as the Golden Spins feature lasts.
The Bonus Round triggers when you land 3, 4 or 5 Book Scatters anywhere in view, and this awards a scatter win up front, respectively. You win 10 free spins either way, and the book opens up for the usual special symbol selection process. A random pay symbol is thus selected to become the expanding scatter pay symbol.
Landing enough instances of the chosen symbol on different reels triggers the expanding feature. This happens after the regular payout has been summed up, and the special symbol will then expand to give you an all-paylines win. The symbols do not need to land on adjacent reels to expand, and you win +10 extra spins if you land 3 book scatters on the same free spin.
The 200 Spins Book of Raider Slot Experience
We decided to play with Boost Mode on, and it paid off almost immediately. We trigger the Royal League Jackpot feature into the highlights video, and you can see for yourself which of the prizes we got away with by hitting the play button below. We didn’t bother with the bonus round this time, since it’s a standard ‘Book of’ mechanic feature anyway.
Review Summary
The developer has done a lot of things right with what amounts to their very first ‘Book slot’ effort. The ancient Egypt theme might be standard stuff in one way, but the visuals come with an appealing finish. In addition, the soundtrack isn’t the usual “mysterious Egypt” cliche, but actually a more low-key, yet somewhat upbeat, tune. It might not seem like all that much in writing, but it adds up to a different flavor that went down well with us.
The Boost Mode feature seems like a good idea if you want a thrilling break from the base game grind on a regular basis, but keep in mind that it reduces the RTP. Still, it keeps the base game more interesting for sure, not least since you can win up to 10,000x your stake from the Royal League feature. The bonus round is done 100 % “by the book” though, and even the top-tier RTP is below many other ‘book slot’ installments.
