It’s a bit hard to understand what Hurricane Games had in mind when they called this release Apes of Doom. Sure, it sounds cool and all, but you also feel kind of misled when you see the actual game. It revolves around a pack of rough looking apes robbing a bank, so it’s basically a heist slot. The 4-reel layout is somewhat rare, and it becomes even more unusual when you factor in the 3 ‘hot zoned’ multiplier reels squeezed in-between.
These multiplier Hot Zones are at the heart of everything that goes on, as they provide indefinite respins with a guaranteed multiplier win when the 3 hot zones land matching values. This keeps the base game somewhat interesting, while everything is enhanced in the bonus round. The heist soundtrack keeps up the tension, and the Art Deco visual style is strangely fitting for a game about bank robbing monkeys.
Apes of Doom Slot Features
You can turn on/off the Super Stake feature between base game spins, and turning it on doubles your bonus round chances. It also doubles the price you pay per spin, but you can still play with as little as 20p per round. The Ape premium symbols pay between 8 and 30 x your stake for 4 of a kind wins, while the Golden Banana Wild pays the same. The wilds also step in for all regular pay symbols to help complete winning combos.
There are 3 slim Multiplier Reels squeezed in-between each of the 4 regular reels, and the center position comes with a framed Hot Zone. Random multiplier values land in these hot zones per spin, and if you get 3 matching multipliers they are added together to boost the current win.
If there is no win present, you trigger the Respins to Win feature. Basically, the multiplier stays active for an indefinite amount of respins, and the feature goes on until you land a win so the multiplier can be applied. All base game wins can be gambled in an optional feature that can be turned on/off.
The Bonus Round is triggered when you land 3 or 4 scatters anywhere in view, and you get a scatter win of 2x or 10x your stake up front, respectively. You also get 10 or 15 free spins, respectively, and all wins are boosted by the sum of whatever multiplier values are present in the 3 Hot Zones. The Respins to Win feature is still triggered if you land 3 matching multipliers in the Hot Zones, and 3 or 4 scatters award 5 or 10 extra spins, respectively.

Review Summary
The title of this game comes across as a tad too dramatic, and it would be more fitting for an installment in the Planet of the Apes franchise. The Apes of Doom gang look mean enough, don’t get us wrong, but they are robbing a bank, not causing the Apocalypse. The 4-reel setup with multiplier reels in-between is a clever device, but most of the time you’ll match up small to mid-level multipliers.
Still, it feels nice to know that you’re guaranteed to win each time matching multipliers line up in the base game, and the free respins can also land you the bonus round. In the feature, all wins are boosted by the random Hot Zone multiplier sum, and you still get the Respin to Win feature. The 3,351x potential is somewhat mediocre though, but overall this is an okay and somewhat novel heist slot installment from Hurricane Games.
