Our Verdict
While Wings of Horus game is a decent attempt to follow in the footsteps of its predecessor, it doesn’t quite capture the original game's gritty essence. The characters and the soundtrack from the first game were more menacing and engaging. The mummy pharaohs in this sequel, with their dark, vacant eyes, lack personality. Although the atmosphere is somewhat creepy, the background music grew repetitive, and I found myself turning it off after a while, though I kept the sound effects.
The symbols are visually similar to those in Hand of Anubis, though the gold accents are less prominent. This subtle use of color still effectively distinguishes the premium symbols from the lower-paying ones, which tend to blend into the monochromatic scheme. However, the Orb symbol upgrade system doesn't feel as exciting or impactful as the Soul Orbs Wild Multiplier feature in the predecessor. While Orbs land relatively frequently to upgrade symbol types, they rarely produce anything significant.
This developer is known for balanced games, where explosive wins can occur out of the blue in all stages. This seems less likely in Wings of Horus, due to the absence of the usual multiplier action. While 7,776 win ways and symbol upgrades offer the theoretical potential for big wins, the Orb transformations lack the tension and excitement I've come to expect from this developer. The 500x instant prize for spelling HORUS, while an okay addition, comes across as a cheap add-on to compensate for the lack of true base game thrills.
The bonus round also fails to impress, with the final free spin feeling anticlimactic in most rounds during my testing. It's challenging to accumulate more than 2 or 3 Orbs, and their impact is often underwhelming. It would be one thing if they only produced wilds in the bonus round, but that’s sadly not the case. The 15,000x potential is solid enough, but it just doesn't feel as attainable as is usually the case. Overall, Wings of Horus is an okay sequel, but I would stick with if I had to choose between the two.
