Our Verdict
The only relationship I have to the subject matter is reading the Roald Dahl book as a kid, as I have never watched the 1971 movie. I also find the Condescending Wonka meme to be hilarious, so the film is definitely on my watch list for that reason alone. When it comes to this slot series, however, I have mixed feelings.
If you love the movie, Willy Wonka Everlasting Gobstopper may tug on your nostalgic heartstrings, but there isn’t much here for those who could care less about the movie. The spin pace is somewhat awkward even with the turbo switched on, and the visual presentation has a dated vibe that may be intentional to match the 70s style of the movie. Still, it feels like an outdated experience in more than one way, with features that fail to engage.
The Mystery Replacement feature is a bit strange, as you will land random symbols per spin anyway. It’s like the game is making a number of it instead of simply allowing premium symbols and wilds to land organically, like in most slots. The Wild Reels feature is more useful, in my view, and can deliver decent base game wins. The Oompa Loompa Feature has its charm, but the prizes you win seldom add up to anything significant.
The same goes for the Chocolate River pick bonus, and you seldom get more than the minimum of 5 picks. The Free Spins bonus is the most engaging feature in my experience, with more frequent wild reels and upgradable gobstopper prize symbols and multiplier boosts. Sadly, the max win and volatility of this game remain a mystery, but I do like the Golden Ticket bonus prize you can win after each of the main bonus features. Still, there are better installments in this series than Willy Wonka Everlasting Gobstopper, at least in my humble opinion.
