Viking Honour XtraWild Review
We haven’t really tried any slots before this review assignment, but we understand that they partnered up with someone some years ago. Viking Honour XtraWild follows in the experimental footsteps of 2 previous warrior-like releases, and this developer seems to have a thing for wild symbol features.
Walking wild frames take center stage in both the base game and the bonus round, and the latter comes with full walking wild frame reels. The premium symbol type that gets a wild frame upgrade is determined at the end of each spin by the Wild Selector, and you’ll see plenty of walking wild frames in all stages of the game. The visuals are a bit dated for our taste though, and the advertised 6,261x max win seems unrealistic (see why in the review summary below).
Viking Honour XtraWild Features
The viking paraphernalia premium symbols pay between 1 and 5 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins, and the Wild symbol pays 8.33x your stake for the same. The wild also substitutes for all regular pay symbols to help complete wins, and the same goes for the overlay wild frames we’ll discuss below.
The Wild Selector feature is active on all spins, and a random premium symbol is selected as the reel spins. All 5 premiums are stacked up in the Wild Selector meter on the left-hand side, and the selected symbol is highlighted. If the selected symbol is present on the regular reels, fireballs are thrown from the meter to attach an overlay wild frame to all instances of it.
A new payout calculation is then summed up if the wild frames created a win, and the wild frames move one step to the right per spin that follows. This goes on continuously in the base game, giving you plenty of walking wild frames on a regular basis. The wild frames eventually move off the grid to the uttermost right, and disappear.
Landing 3, 4 or 5 of the viking warrior scatter symbol triggers the Bonus Round, and this awards 8, 15 or 25 free spins, respectively. Wild frames from the base game are carried over into the bonus round, and now any wild frame will expand to cover the full reel. The expanded wild frame moves one step to the right per free spin, and the Wild Selector feature thus works the same except that it now generates walking wild reel frames instead of walking wild frame positions.
The 200 Spins Viking Honour XtraWild Experience
You get to see a great deal of the Wild Selector base game feature, before we trigger the bonus round at 1:47 into the 3:40-minute highlights video. We got only the minimum of 8 free spins, but it was enough to land us a decent total win. We got lucky with the Wild Selector feature in other words, and you can check it all out for yourself by hitting the play button below.
Review Summary
Someone-partner, someone, has played around with somewhat similar features in previous releases, not least the pirate charmer something, and we like how they keep experimenting with new ways of doing things. What holds their games back overall, is perhaps the sense that they are created in another decade. A more modern visual presentation wouldn’t hurt in other words, but we get that different markets have different preferences.
You get plenty of walking overlay wild frames in the base game, which helps keep the grind more interesting, but the 250x you win from a full screen of wilds is hardly enough to make you filthy rich. Cracking the advertised 6,261x potential requires not only the maximum of 25 free spins, but also a full wild screen on every single free spin. Not very likely in other words, but decent back-to-back payouts can certainly come if you get plenty of walking expanded wild action.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Random Wild Selector feature per spin | Realistic max win is probably a lot lower |
| Walking Wild frames for selected symbols | Beware of adjustable RTP ranges |
| FS w/ expanded walking wild frames | Somewhat dated visual presentation |
| Win up to 6,261x your stake (in theory) |
If you enjoy Viking Honour XtraWild you should also try:
something - is a swashbuckling pirate release from someone, and the 5x3 grid is set between 2 rivaling pirate ships engaging in battle. Cannonballs fly all the time, turning random symbols wild, while also providing win multipliers. This cannonball feature is enhanced in the bonus round, and this is well worth trying if you enjoyed the game at hand.
something - is an oriental warrior slot set in the far east, and this installment comes with a 3-reel Hot Zone at the center. This hot zone spins independently, and only premiums or feature triggering symbols appear in it. A central feature is the wild conversion, and there is also a bonus round for payouts up to 1,000x your stake.
something - comes with a somewhat similar theme, but this release is played out on 5x4 reels with 1,024 default win ways. The grid can expand up to 5x5 though, with 3,125 win ways, and you get plenty of varied wild symbol action in both the base game and the bonus round. The max win is a decent 6,000x your stake.
