Van Der Wilde and the Outlaws Features
The Outlaws logo Wild serves double duty as a scatter, but as a wild it steps in for all regular pay symbols to help complete winning combos. The Wild does not hold any value of its own, while the 4 outlaw premium symbols pay between 10 and 250 x your stake for 5-oak wins. Any win involving a wild triggers the Expanding Wins feature.
The Expanding Wins feature is somewhat related to the infamous ‘Book of’ mechanic, and you get the regular payout first. After that, all the involved winning symbols expand to cover the full reels. This awards a new and possibly larger payout, and the involved wild (or wilds) is the only symbol that doesn’t expand.
You need 3 scatters anywhere in view to trigger the Free Games feature, and this awards 8 free spins for starters. The feature can be retriggered with 8 extra spins in the same manner, and which of the 5 bonus round options you get is determined randomly from a spinning wheel. Each of the 4 outlaws have their own feature, but what you really want is Super Spins.
The only difference between the regular features is which symbol becomes the Super Symbol. Mad Dog, Buffalo Butch, Bonney Cassidy or Van der Wilde can be assigned that role from the wheel. The Super Symbol triggers the Expanding Wins feature when a win is generated from it, without the need for a wild symbol to be involved. There is a lot to like in Van Der Wilde and the Outlaws, at least if you're a fan of gritty high risk/reward installments in the Wild West genre. The eerie quiet dusty smalltown is flawlessly crafted, and we also like how the understated soundtrack adds to the menacing vibe. This effort might not be enough to outgun the hard-hitting alphas of the Western genre, but it’s certainly a solid release with some interesting ‘Book of’ mechanic inspired features.
The Expanding Wins feature makes the barebones base game interesting, at least on those rare occasions when you get to see it in action. The bonus rounds come with even more expanding symbols action, which can turn a regular 5-oak win into a large to massive full screen payout. The Super Spins feature is your best bet at cracking the 8,000x potential though, due to all 4 outlaws being Super Symbols on 4 different reel sets.
