We have seen the classic Lewis Carrol tale, ‘Alice In Wonderland’, depicted countless times in the form of different online slots, but it’s not too often you see a game based around Carrol’s follow-up book, ‘Through the Looking-Glass’. Alice goes through a mirror instead of tumbling down the rabbit hole in this sequel, and the main antagonist is The Red Queen. Alice is conspicuously absent in this release though, as it revolves around the Queen and some other characters.

Set against a backdrop of fluorescent mushrooms, the 5x3 grid is filled with different characters and an abundance of mystery symbols to boot. These can reveal split symbols, and unlocking the 6th reel is the main aim. This will get you a multiplier wild Queen Respin feature, or perhaps even the bonus round. The latter comes with 3 soldier modifiers from the added top reel, and you can win up to 5,000x your stake. Find out all about the features below.

The Red Queen Slot Features

The character premium symbols, with the Queen as the top-tier symbol, pay between 1 and 2.5 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins. Unlocking the 6th reel means that you can win up to 5x your stake from a single payline, at best.

Wilds appear on reels 2 to 5 to help complete and/or improve wins, and you can expect a Mystery Symbols on almost every spin. All present Mystery Symbols turn into a random matching symbol type, with the possibility of 2 or 4 instances per position.

The 6th reel is unlocked when you land 2 or 3 scatters on the same base game spin, and only blanks, scatters, or queen symbols will appear on the 6th reel. The bonus round triggers when you land a scatter on the 6th reel, and landing a Queen means you trigger the Queen Respin feature.

The Queen Respin turns all present scatter symbols into wilds with a random multiplier value of x2, x3, or x4 per wild. The multiplier wilds become sticky for the respin that follows, and if multiple multiplier wilds are part of the same line win, the multiplier values are multiplied together before being applied.

You can land scatter symbols on reels 2 to 6 only, and you need 3 or 4 in view to trigger the Bonus Round. A clock determines how many free spins you get. With 3 triggering scatters the numbers between 4 and 12 are marked green, while the numbers between 6 and 12 are marked green with 4 triggering scatters. If the clock stops at the green segment, you get the number of free spins it stops on, as well as a new clock spin to get even more free spins.

The 6th reel is always active in the bonus round, and it can land all the regular paying symbols during the feature. A top reel with 4 soldiers also comes into play during the feature, and they reveal different modifiers as follows:

• +Ways - guarantees a split symbol (up to 4 instances) on the reel below.
• +Wild - adds a multiplier wild of x2, x3, or x5 on the reel below.
• +1 Spin - awards +1 extra free spin (there is no cap on the number of FS).

Review Summary

We have seen plenty of Alice In Wonderland inspired releases in recent years, and in The Red Queen Alice herself is nowhere to be found. It doesn’t really matter much though, as this is still a solid and entertaining installment in the fantasy/fairytale genre. You get an abundance of mystery symbols in this game for sure, but they do slow down the pace of the game since the question mark has to do its little pirouette each time.

This can probably annoy some players, and not least since the mystery symbols will far from always lead to any kind of win. We like that the mystery symbol can reveal split symbols though. The Queen Respin feature hits more rarely, but it can make a solid dent when it does. The bonus round comes with a hit rate, which is below average, but this is where you’re most likely to close in on the 5,000x potential. It comes with a spins hit rate, and overall The Red Queen is worth checking out for fans of the Lewis Carrol fantasy world.
