There are certain movies that still linger in the back of your head from when you grew up, and Stargate from 1994 is definitely such a “milestone” movie. The special effects will certainly look dated compared to the CGI we’ve become used to today, but it’s still well worth a watch in our humble opinion. We are therefore happy that a Megaways slot based around the Roland Emmerich classic has been released.

The megaways grid is surrounded by the Stargate, and the left-hand side of it serves as a feature Trail. You also get an arced top-reel which blends right in with the high-tech environment, and Kurt Russel, James Spader and Jaye Davidson bring starpower to what amounts to a solid sci-fi production. The movie grossed $196.6 million worldwide, and the slot version gives you a chance to win 25,000x your stake (capped at £250,000).

The premium symbols pay between 1.5 and 10 x your stake for 6 of a kind wins. The gold medallion Wild steps in for all pay symbols to help complete wins, but the wild holds now value of its own. The Trail does not award any more modifiers or features until you reach segment 7, 8 or 9, and these 3 segments trigger the feature pick Bonus Game that leads into the Bonus Round. You will then get 7 picks, and matching up 2 hieroglyph symbols awards a modifier you’ll bring with you into the bonus round.

The number of free spins you get is determined by the gate segment you landed on, and segment 7, 8 or 9 gives you 5, 6 or 7 free spins, respectively. Here’s an overview of the 7 possible bonus round modifiers, and whatever you brought with your from the bonus pick game can trigger at random times:

Review Summary

A lot of things has been done right in this branded effort, and the Stargate-framed Megaways grid looks pretty cool with the arced top reel to boot. The pace could have been better though, something a turbo option could have fixed. Each cascade takes a tad too long, but this also helps build tension as you progress on the Trail. You get some famous faces from the movie, of course, and the visual Stargate effect as you enter the bonus round is stunning.

Spreading out the modifiers across the trail, or at least making a few of them available before segment 5, would have made for a more exciting base game. Reaching segment 5 will hopefully catapult you up to at least segment 7, although some of the modifiers can lead to solid payouts on their own. The 25,000x potential is solid enough, although capped at £250,000, and overall this is a thrilling trip down memory lane for anyone old enough to remember the original 1994 blockbuster.
