The game has recently changed the core element of its inspiration into a tomb, and we can only assume it's for legal reasons. They’re not taking any chances with Pilgrim of Dead, as it comes with a tomb scatter/wild from the get-go.

The visual presentation is a tad darker than usual perhaps, but you get the ancient Egypt look nonetheless. The ‘Book of’ mechanic bonus round comes with a twist we haven’t really seen before, as you get sticky special expanding symbols on up to all 5 of the reels. The tradeoff is lower than usual symbol values, and only 5 initial free spins when the feature triggers. You can reject the first chosen symbol though, and the 10,000x potential is 2x what you usually get in this genre.

The premium symbols pay between 12.5 and 100 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins, and the Tomb symbol serves double duty as both Wild and Scatter. As a wild, the tomb substitutes for pay symbols to help complete wins, and the tomb pays the same as the top-tier Pharaoh symbol when you land 3, 4, or 5 anywhere in view.

Landing 3+ scatters in view is also how you trigger the Bonus Round, and this gives you 5 free spins no matter the amount of triggering scatters. A pay symbol is chosen randomly to become the special expanding scatter pay symbol, and you can reject the first choice to get a second random selection process. You have to accept what you get the second time, however, so choose wisely.

The special expanding symbol pays after the regular win calculation. If the chosen symbol is a premium symbol, only 2 in view anywhere triggers the book mechanic, while 3+ is needed for the low-value royal symbols. The big twist is that the first special symbol to land on each reel becomes sticky for the remainder of the bonus round.

The sticky symbol reverts to its original 1x1 size after the expanding mechanic has played out, and you can potentially get back to back full screen wins if all reels contain a sticky special symbol. You can retrigger the bonus round to win extra spins, and you get +5 free spins from 3 tomb scatters. Up to 30 free spins can be won in total, at best.

The atmosphere in Pilgrim of Dead is somewhat darker than usual, but the ancient Egypt presentation is still recognizable to say the least. We would prefer more installments with a more refreshing and original theme to be honest, but purists may prefer this. The big twist in Pilgrim of Dead comes with a few payoffs, and it will probably not be for everyone.

The symbol values are lower than usual, for one, and getting only 5 free spins for starters seems a bit stingy. It can take a while to trigger the feature, and it’s mighty frustrating when you cannot get sticky expanding symbols. Retrigger to get extra spins while filling up the reels with a juicy expanding symbol for back to back wins, however, and you’ll probably not mind too much. Just don’t expect that scenario to happen a lot. The 10,000x potential is twice the “standard” for this genre, and the win cap comes with a 1 in 100 million hit rate.
