At first glance we thought the quirky pack of Nitro-animals had taken a break from the apocalypse, and simply gone on a well-deserved vacation. Apparently, however, they’re on the run from the evil Sergeant Nitro Wolf. They’re basically waiting things out on the beach, just like the Yakuza gangsters in Takeshi Kitano’s unforgettable Sonatine (1993). There is plenty to cover.

The default 6x4 grid is framed by a garbage compactor, and up to 4 extra rows are added via the Avalanche mechanic. You get mega symbols and wilds up to size 4x4 this time, as well as Big Nitro Reels packing 2x2-sized symbols. Both the regular and the super version of the bonus round can trigger organically. The 50,000x potential is an all-time high for this game.

You win by landing 3 to 6 matching symbols on adjacent reels, and the 4 animal-character premium symbols pay between 2 and 5 x your stake for 6 of a kind wins. Wilds step in for regular pay symbols to help complete wins, and both wilds and pay symbols can land in size 1x1, 2x2, 3x3 and 4x4. Larger symbols always count as 1x1 symbols if part of a win.

Winning symbols are removed via the Avalanche mechanic, and this allows for new and/or existing symbols to drop down to fill the gaps. The process repeats as long as you keep winning, and a new row is added per Avalanche up to 8 rows at the most.

In addition, you have 5 Special Symbols that can appear at random times, and these come with the following modifier effects:

• Redrop - removes all symbols except bonus scatters and Nitro Reels, and all Nitro Reel symbols reshuffle.
• Both Ways - make wins count also from right to left, instead of just left to right.
• Nitro Match - transforms Nitro Reel symbols on the same or adjacent reels to a symbol type that matches a symbol on an adjacent reel.
• Nitro Upgrade - upgrades Nitro Reels on the same or adjacent reels, so they contain more symbols.
• Nitro Wild - replaces all symbols in Nitro Reels on the same or adjacent reels with wilds.

You trigger the Bonus Round when you land 3, 4, 5 or 6 Zeppelin scatters anywhere in view, and this awards 8, 12, 16 or 20 free spins, respectively. Nitro Reels become sticky for the duration of the feature, and they stack on top of each other if they land on the same reel. The grid expansion is saved between free spins, via the Safety Level feature, but the grid still maxes out at 6x8.

This means that you don’t start all over again between Avalanche sequences, like in the base game, and a Super version of the bonus round triggers if at least one Super Bonus symbol is part of the triggering spin. The grid is then fully expanded from the get-go, and the Win Both Ways modifier is always active. You can retrigger the bonus round during both tiers of the feature.

The toxic beach setting is a welcome break from the usual dystopia, although the quirky post-apocalyptic atmosphere still seeps through all over the place.

Just like with many releases, it’s hard to keep track of everything that’s happening at any given moment, so you just have to surrender to the experience and hope for the best. Alternatively, you can cherry pick features from the X-iter menu. There’s more than enough new stuff to merit this 3rd installment, and the 50,000x potential is a new personal record . Overall, you get a chaotic, intense and insane ride with all the best this game has to offer rolled into one.
