Lunar New Year Game Review
Lunar New Year is a new game inspired by the popular board game. This edition draws inspiration from the self-titled game from Hasbro that celebrates the Chinese spring festival. Mixing up Asian culture, classic elements, and numerous exciting features, the Lunar New Year game offers players rewards of over 13,000x the stake, which would be a perfect gift for those into the Asian theme.
There's plenty going on in this Asian-themed game.

Lunar New Year - Game Outlook
Although Lunar New Year is a part of a wider franchise, it doesn't really fit into that category. It's more of an Asian-style game with a twist rather than a game with an Asian theme, and it's only the character symbol that reminds you of the self-titled board game. True to the genre, we're taken to a somewhat standard Chinese surrounding, where the backdrop is made up of a patterned red wallpaper image. A familiar Asian soundtrack plays whilst you spin, capturing the essential Chinese vibe and adding a final touch to the general atmosphere.
Dominating the view is a standard 5x3 reel setup with an AnyWays pay system, producing 243 ways to play on each base game spin. Above the reels, 1, 3, and 5 are sitting bonus chests, which spin horizontally. Those aren't only cosmetic though and play into the features, displaying bet multipliers of bonus games. The Lunar New Year game comes with a betting range of €0.22 to €20 per spin, which should appeal to many. The volatility is high, while the RTP is a whisker beneath average at 95.95%. Wins of up to 13,771x the stake are possible, though, the maximum win value is capped at €250,000 for a single spin.
The paytable in the Lunar New Year game involves 11 regular symbols that are split into highs and lows. The lower section is made up of classic A-J royals, and the premium lot comprises in ascending order fruit baskets, pigs, gifts, tea sets, Chinese buildings, all topped by the character, worth up to 7.5x your bet. The other premiums pay from 1.5x to 3.75x the bet, and you need to land at least 3 matching symbols adjacently on the reels starting from the leftmost to score a payout. Wild symbols are also included, which appear on reels 2-4 only and substitute for any other regular symbols to produce bigger winning opportunities.
Lunar New Year - Bonus Features
The Lunar Chests above the reels are the key to accessing three of the bonus games laid down in the Lunar New Year game. Whenever a Lunar Coin symbol lands on the reels, it reveals either a Token Value multiplier of 1.5x to 10x that pays instantly or a Crescent Moon symbol. If a Crescent Moon symbol is revealed on reels 1, 3, or 5, it triggers the Chest above and awards the respective prize to the player.
- Bet Multiplier of 3x to 188x the stake.
- Expanding Reels Free Spins - awards 8 Free Spins, where reels randomly expand on each spin to either 5x4, 5x5, or 5x6, producing up to 7,776 paylines. Lunar Coins can award +1 or +2 extra free games, up to 50.
- Lunar Chest Free Spins - awards 8 Free Spins, where only Lunar Coins can appear. During the bonus, there are Lunar Chests above each reel, and each coin can reveal either a Token Value multiplier from 0.5x to 10x, extra free games up to 50, Crescent Moon symbol, or a Full Moon symbol, which awards all 5 Chests in view.
- Jackpot Feature - players are presented with 15 picks, each revealing 1 or 2 cards, which may be Property or Upgrade Cards. Revealing 3 Upgrade Cards upgrades all possible jackpot values to the next level and the Grand jackpot to Double Grand jackpot, while collecting 4 Property Cards of the same group awards the corresponding jackpot prize. The Mini, Minor, Major, and Grand Jackpots are worth 10x, 25x, 100x, and 2,000x the bet respectively.
On any base game spin, the Red Envelope feature may randomly pop up to award a random mystery cash prize. For wagers from 22 to 62 credits, the fixed prize is 888 credits, while for higher wagers the prize is 3,888 credits.
Lunar New Year - Game Verdict
While there's a lot for players to get stuck into in the Lunar New Year game in terms of the gameplay, it has really little resemblance with Hasbro's itself. Most is done in a strict Asian style, and you can't tell for sure if you're playing a game until the character symbol randomly hits during the base game, or the Jackpot Feature is triggered, which usually takes longer. Anyway, with plenty of features and random base game cash awards, Lunar New Year is a decent option for a Chinese-loving audience. On the other hand, however, those into the game won't find a lot here to get super fired.
| Pros | Cons |
