What makes this game stick out however, is the symbol splitting mechanic you’ll benefit from in all stages of the game. It’s limited to only 3 reels in the base game, but symbols can split on all 5 reels at the same time in the bonus round. Merlin's Grimoire Slot Features
The premium symbols pay between 2.5 and 4 x your stake for 5 of a kind, and the grimoire (book of spells) serve as both wild and scatter. As a wild, the grimoire steps in for all regular pay symbols to help complete wins, and as a scatter it triggers the bonus round. More about that below.
You can get Splitting Symbols in the base game, and this happens when reels 1, 2 and/or 3 are activated. All symbols on activated reels split in two, and this increases the number of win ways accordingly.
You need 3, 4 or 5 Grimoire scatters in view to trigger the Bonus Round, and this gives you an upfront payout of 0.8, 1.6 or 4 x your stake, respectively. Review Summary
The story-telling element has been taken to a new level with this release, as the voiceover commentary adds a layer of drama you don’t usually get in online slots. If you should find the commentary annoying however, you can always turn off the voice while keeping the other sounds. The visual presentation is highly enjoyable as well, and it’s nice to be outdoors in the forest instead of yet another claustrophobic tomb.
The splitting symbols keep the base game more interesting than the standard book slot, making larger payouts theoretically possible. They really shine in the bonus round however, not least since all 5 reels can become activated. This can lead to massive payouts up to 35,000x your stake, which is way above the regular 5K you get in this genre.
