Lucky 9 Review
Lucky 9 is a beautifully crafted arcade-style slot that comes with 3D pixelated symbols it’s a joy to behold. They might not look as tasty and juicy as regular fruit symbols, but what these symbols lack in terms of edibility, they take back in spades when it comes to nostalgic value and charm. The game seemingly aims to replace 7 with 9 as the new lucky number, and they surely succeed within the framework of this game at least.
It all plays out on 6 reels, 3 rows and 20 fixed paylines, and you can place bets between £20 and £9,000 per spin across all platforms and devices. Prepare for a trip down memory lane, as you spin yourself back to the primordial ground of modern day video games. Also, don’t forget to choose a volatility that suits your needs. Yes, that’s right, you are free to choose either low, medium (standard) or high volatility here, which makes it harder to blame the game for any losses you might incur.
The defining feature is tied in with the number 9, as the game comes with 4 different multiplier modes. The highest multiplier you can get is 9x, and this automatically allows you 9 spins where that multiplier is guaranteed not to change. Now you probably understand why 9 is your lucky number here, and there is also a bonus round where you can get plenty of extra spins and benefit from the different multipliers. Wins up to 1,300x is possible here, and we had plenty of fun taking this beauty for our usual 200 spins trial run (more on that further down in the review).
What symbols are there?
Clearly inspired by classic arcade games, all the fruity symbols in this game are pixelated in a tasteful retro style. The wild is the highest value symbol here, and the big juicy strawberry is the most valuable regular symbol. You need between 3 and 6 matching symbols to win, and here we present you with the paytable for Lucky 9 slot (adjusted to display line wins per total stake):
- Wild symbol - Pays 25x for 6 on a payline
- Star scatter - Pays 10x for 6 anywhere
- Strawberry - Pays 12.5x for 6 on a payline
- Lemon - Pays 6x for 6 on a payline
- Pear - Pays 3x for 6 on a payline
- Watermelon - Pays 2x for 6 on a payline
- Cherries - Pays 1.5x for 6 on a payline
- Plum - Pays 1x for 6 on a payline
What are the bonus features?
The wild symbol will step in for all regular symbols in such a way that your winnings are maximized, but it cannot step in for the scatter symbol or other special symbols in the game. It’s also the highest paying symbol in Lucky 9 slot, and it pays out 2.5x, 5x, 12.5x and 25x when you land 3, 4, 5 or 6 wilds on a payline, respectively.
The bonus feature that defines Lucky 9 is the variable win multiplier symbols. Above the reels you will see 4 different multiplier values, namely 1x, 3x, 6x and 9x, and one of these will be active at all times. If you land a 3x multiplier symbol, for example, all wins will be boosted by 3x from now on, until you land a different multiplier value symbol.
The real magic happens when you land the 9x multiplier symbol in the base game, as this gives you 9 Lucky Spins where the 9x multiplier cannot be changed. This means that you are guaranteed that no other multiplier symbols land on the next 9 spins, and all the “prime real estate” will thus only be occupied by symbols that benefit you.
There is also a gambling feature you can check out on every win, and this is a standard card guessing double or nothing game.
Free spins in Lucky 9
The free spins bonus round is the highlight of this game, and you need to land at least 3 scatter symbols anywhere on the same spin to trigger it. Before the feature plays out, however, you will get a scatter win of either 2.5x, 5x, 7.5x or 10x, when you land 3, 4, 5 or 6 scatters, respectively. You will then be granted 10 free spins to start out with in this feature.
If the 9x multiplier was active when the bonus round was triggered, it remains active throughout the whole feature, and the same goes if you trigger the 9x multiplier on a free spin. You can also land symbols with 3FS+, 6FS+ or 9FS+ on them, and these will give you the given amount of extra spins whenever they land during the bonus round.
Depending on your jurisdiction, you can also opt to buy the free spins feature, and you will get to choose between all 4 different multipliers. You will get 10 free spins no matter what, and the prize you have to pay will vary according to which multiplier option you choose. This is how it looks:
- 10 fs starting with 1x multiplier costs 39x your stake
- 10 fs starting with 3x multiplier costs 45x your stake
- 10 fs starting with 6x multiplier costs 54x your stake
- 10 fs with guaranteed 9x multiplier costs 128x your stake
Just to be clear, the most expensive option guarantees you a 9x multiplier on all spins, while for the other options the multiplier might change as the feature plays out. This can be for better or for worse, depending in which multiplier symbol you land.
How to play
Lucky 9 is really not a complicated slot in any way, but it comes with many different details you can adjust and play with as you see fit. The game has 20 fixed paylines, and the bet levels you get to choose from takes this into consideration. You will not see any bet level per payline here, but instead you can choose to stake between £20 and £9,000 per spin in total.
This might be too high for casual players, but high rollers should have nothing to complain about here. The hamburger menu down to the left gets you into the game options, and here you can also check out the paytable. On the right-hand side of the spin button, you will see a small icon with an energy bar. This is where you set the pace of the spins, and you can choose between normal speed, fast speed and ultra fast speed. On the left-hand side of the spin button there is a graph icon, and this is where you get to choose the game’s volatility. You can choose either low, medium or high volatility, and this will naturally affect your gameplay in a major way. Low volatility will in theory give you plenty of smaller wins, while high volatility gears things up for fewer, but more significant wins.
The game also comes with a nice range of autoplay options, and you can choose between 10 and 1,000 autospins here. You can also choose to stop the autoplay feature at any win, or when the bonus round is triggered. In addition, you can stop the autoplay when your winnings exceed a given amount, or when your bankroll has increased or decreased a given amount.

The 200 Spins Lucky 9 Trial
One thing is for certain, setting this game to low volatility does not make it into Starburst, to put it that way. Since there are 3 volatility modes to choose from, we decided to do 200 spins in each mode, and this is done in what feels like a blink of an eye with the ultra fast mode switched on. We chose the lowest total stake of £20, which is still pretty high in our book.
With low volatility switched on, we expected smaller wins quite often, but we got plenty of dead spins here too. We landed a decent amount of wins far below our stake, and also some wins between 1x and 6x. It was hardly enough to keep us afloat, and we ended up being down £1,000 as we closed in on the 200th spin. In the end, the bonus round was triggered, and we got ourselves 25 free spins all in all. This won us back around £250 of what we had already lost.
Of course, you cannot really make statistical judgements from such a small amount of spins, but we did not feel that the medium/standard volatility mode was all that different. We triggered the Lucky Spins feature once, but this gave us only a 5x win on the very last lucky spin. We also triggered the bonus round once, which this time yielded a respective 62.5x our stake.
Again, we are highly subjective here, but it really felt like the game totally shifted gears when we went for the high volatility action. We triggered the bonus round almost right away with the 9x multiplier locked. We got a total of 56 spins and won 406x our stake! Then we won decent base game wins of 5x and 6x, and got the Lucky 9 spins feature 2 times. All in all, these final 200 spins won us back everything we lost in the previous modes, and we made a pretty solid profit on top of it.
Review Summary
We really like the pixelated visuals and retro style this game comes with, and we also like how you get to choose the game pace and volatility in such a detailed way. In our subjective experience, playing in the most volatile mode is the best way to go, but the max win of 1,300x (if it’s indeed correct) seems a bit modest for a high risk game mode.
Perhaps the medium/standard variance option is better in the long run, but in the end it’s up to you what you prefer and feel good about. Either way, this is a fast-paced, arcade-style game with nicely balanced features and some very thrilling 9x-multiplier moments.
