The fishing slot genre has been saturated lately, as more and more developers have caught on to how popular fishing slots are. They add another one to the pile with Hook ‘Em Up Frenzy. We can reveal right off the bat that this is close to a reskin of another game, but the potential has been beefed up to 25,000x your stake.

The semi-transparent 5x3 grid is filled with typical fishing slot items, such as floats, tackle boxes, seagulls, and fish, and the fisherman is the bonus symbol. The visual style is more modern, and there isn’t really any actual fishing going on here. You get a reel multiplier upgrade system instead, and it can boost payouts by up to x27 in the base game and x243 in the bonus round.

The premium symbols pay between 0.5 and 4 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins, and you get two different wild symbols in this game. Both the Wild Bass and the Boat Wild step in for pay symbols to help complete wins, but the Wild Bass also triggers a multiplier feature we’ll discuss below.

The Go Fishin’ Spins feature can trigger at any given time in the base game (with a hit rate of 1 in 168 spins), and you will then see up to 3 Wild Bass symbols appear on different reels. The Wild Bass activates the reel multiplier of x2 or x3 per reel, and they are multiplied together for up to x27 boosts. The multiplier is applied to any win involving multiplier reels for the current spin.

You need 3 bonus symbols on reels 1, 3, and 5 to trigger the Bonus Round, and this gives you 8 free spins. The Wild Bass activated reel multipliers do not reset during the bonus round, and you get an x2 reel multiplier first per reel. Landing another Wild Bass upgrades the relevant reel multiplier to x3, and it cannot go higher than that.

Since you can now activate all 5 reels with up to x3 multipliers, the total win multiplier can go as high as x243. If you manage to add a multiplier to all 5 reels, you are immediately awarded with +5 extra free spins. Finally, non-UK players, and anyone living in an eligible jurisdiction, can purchase the bonus round for 100x the stake. This increases the RTP, and the feature has an organic hit rate of 1 in 316 spins.

Review Summary

While many installments in the popular fishing genre floats on an abundance of charm, we didn’t quite get the same cozy vibe from Hook ‘Em Up Frenzy. We got a weird vibe from the fisherman actually, and it was only accentuated by his strange laughter when the bonus round triggers. You don’t hear too much more from him after that, which was a relief, and it doesn’t help that this is more or less a reskin of another game.

The modern, cartoonish visuals are nice enough though, but the game comes across as a bit soulless and uninspired. The reel multiplier system can certainly be effective on a good day, and not least in the bonus round. Multiplier wins are hardly unheard of though, and the feature doesn’t really mesh too well with the fishing theme. The 25,000x potential flies above the 20K you get in the original game, and it seems achievable due to the multiplier system.
