Gold King Review
The tale of King Midas is a well-known story. The Midas in Gold King has the golden touch. Players have reason to be optimistic when they step into his kingdom!
Gold King is a 5 x 3, 20 payline slot with a popular theme. There are no surprises amongst the symbols, which comprise 8 regular symbols, a Wild and a Scatter. Along with the Super Spins feature, the game also offers the randomly triggered Golden Spin feature in Base Game. Gold King delivers a high volatility experience, and offers players a maximum win of 5000x their stake. It has variable RTP’s. Let’s see if everything that glitters really is made of gold!
Bonus Features
Gold King promises Super Stacks on every spin in the Base Game. A different symbol is randomly assigned to appear in stacks of 12 on each reel. Super Stacks have the potential to complete winning combinations when they land on the reels. This mechanism doesn’t have a significant impact, because most Super Stacks that land don’t contribute to wins. Super Stacks do, however, carry winning potential during the Golden Spin feature.
Golden Spin
This feature occurs randomly in the Base Game. A message appears a moment before reels 1, 3 and 5 are filled with matching Super Stacks. The best case scenario is to land matching Super Stacks on reels 2 and 4. Second prize is to land a matching stack on reel 2 only. This feature adds excitement in the Base Game.
Super Spins
This is Gold King’s Free Spins feature, and is triggered when 3 Midas symbols land. It comprises 10 Free Spins, however, if one, two or three more Scatters land during the feature, two, four or ten extra free spins are awarded. During the feature, the Wild symbol appears in stacks of 6 or 7 on all reels, the 3 high symbols all expand to fill entire reels when they’re involved in wins, and the 5 lows appear in stacks of 8 on every spin. This combination of factors gives players a good chance of benefiting from King Midas’s golden touch.
How to play
Gold King’s straightforward functionality gives it certain familiarity as soon as you start playing.
- First, decide what your budget is, and how much you’re going to bet on each spin. To increase or decrease your bet size, click the Plus or Minus buttons adjacent to the bet buttons. Gold King offers 15 different Bet Sizes, starting at a modest €0.20, and going right up to €100 per spin.
- Next, click the Information button to access the paytable. Read the explanation of Super Stacks, Super Spins and Golden Spin, and see which symbols are going to earn you the biggest rewards. Gold King has a dynamic paytable, so if you adjust your bet size, the symbol payouts adjust accordingly.
- Of the game’s eight regular symbols, the Ace, Ten, Jack, Queen, King comprise the lows, and the crown, jewel and ingots the highs. The red rose is the Wild, and the highest paying symbol in play. King Midas is the Scatter.
- Some players like to activate the reels themselves pn each spin, but for everyone else, there’s Autoplay! Click the button on the extreme right of the console to access Autoplay options. To interrupt Autoplay mode, click the Autoplay button.
- Clicking the hamburger menu at the bottom left of the interface opens the Settings dialog, where you can turn Sound, Fast Play and other options on or off.
- It’s time to go for gold! To form a winning combination, land 3 or more matching symbols in adjacent positions on any payline, starting from the leftmost reel. Look out for the randomly triggered Golden Spin as you chase the 3 Scatters that get you into Super Spins.

Gold King isn’t a complex game, but you may want to see Super Stacks, the Golden Spin feature and Super Spins in action before you play for real. If so, the demo version is where you should start.
The 200 Spins Gold King Experience
A 200 spin trial was done. The intention is not to draw conclusions that have statistical merit, but simply to get a sense of the overall playability and potential.
The bet was set at the maximum of 100 credits per spin. Super Stacks land here and there, but have no discernible impact on fortunes. When the Golden Spin feature eventually triggers, it feels like a non-event, because it doesn’t deliver a win.
Three glowing King Midas symbols are peering back from the reels. Super Spins was triggered! On the fifth spin, a stack of Wilds on reel 3, and crown symbols on reels 1 and 2 landed. The crowns expand, resulting in a win of 20x the triggering stake. Things get even better on the eighth spin: Wild Stacks on two reels, and ingot symbols on a further 2 landed. The ingots expand, and this time almost 52x the triggering stake was won! No Scatters landed during the feature, so no retriggers, but very happy with the Super Spins haul of 7,975 credits - almost 80x the triggering stake.
The trial was started with a balance of 17,965 credits, and finished well up on that, with 24,230. It goes to show, never form an opinion about a game - particularly a high volatility one - until you’ve triggered the bonus!
Review Summary
While Gold King’s theme, graphics and features are all well executed, it doesn’t have a standout attribute that sets it apart from similar slots in the market. What it does have in its favour is the way that the various elements are brought together, to create a highly playable game.
With this being a classic high volatility slot, perhaps a little too much is made of the Super Stacks mechanism and Golden Spin feature in Base Game. Super Stacks do not play a significant part in the game, and don’t expect fireworks when Golden Spin triggers, because you’re likely to be disappointed. It’s when you have the patience and the budget to persist until you trigger Super Spins that King Midas finally reveals his golden touch. You must navigate plenty of dead spins to get to the big wins, but when you finally pull it off, it will probably be worth your while.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Stacked Wilds and expanding highs during Super Spins | Base game features have little impact on gameplay |

If you like Gold King, you’ll probably like:
Midas being the legend he is, he’s inspired a number of slot games. If you enjoy Gold King, these games may also be to your liking.
Along with its theme, Midas Golden Touch has many similarities to Gold King. It’s a medium to high volatility slot, with 15 paylines and an RTP of 96.1%. The game offers up to 32x Wild Multipliers, and the prospect of winning up to 10100x your stake. As with Gold King, there’s much to recommend the Bonus game, which comes with a great Sticky Respins feature.
Goldify also stars King Midas, While the art and UI feel somewhat dated, this game has plenty going for it from a playability perspective. It offers medium volatility gameplay, an RTP of 94.2%, and a maximum payout of 1873x your stake. Players can ‘‘goldify’ any regular symbol to increase its value by 5x. The Free Spins feature comprises 15 to 100 Free Spins, increasing to a possible 500 spins with retriggers. During the feature, as many as 5 gold symbols can be gold at once.
If your enjoyment of Gold King has more to do with gameplay than King Midas, then you’ll like Book of Dead. It also has an Ancient Civilisations theme, but this time the action takes place in Egypt. The game comes with a Gamble Feature, but the main attraction is Free Spins with Expanding symbols. Based on similar mechanics to Gold King, Book of Dead offers high volatility gameplay, a max win of 5000x your stake - and RTP ranges.
