Gladius Death or Glory Review
Gladius Death or Glory is a fitting title, as you will either sink or float if you manage to battle your way into the bonus round. The base game plays out in an inner alcove of the Coliseum, with the 5x5 grid placed amidst a display of swords, shields, and banners. Regular line wins are not possible in this game, and you will either land stone-carved blanks, shield mystery symbols, or bonus scatters.
Brace yourself for plenty of dead spins in the base game, with occasional Shield symbols turning into Coin prizes worth up to 1,000x your stake. The Shields can also reveal multiplier symbols of up to x20, boosting all prizes in view, or Collectors collecting all prizes. The latter triggers a respin of all collected coins, a process that repeats as long as unspent Collectors are present. That’s the base game in a nutshell for you, and the main goal is to land 3 bonus scatters.
This is how you trigger the Bonus Game in Gladius Death or Glory, and it’s a hold and win-style feature with sticky Shield symbols. You can win up to 15,000x your stake in all stages of this game, but the price you pay is a volatility level that clocks in at 5 out of 5. You can play with bet levels between €0.1 and €100 per spin, which caters to most types of players, and Wild symbols are not present in this game.
With a hit frequency of 17.31 %, you can expect smaller wins here and there in the base game, but not too often. Larger payouts come along once in a while, not least in the bonus round. The top-tier RTP of 96.29 % is a bit above the industry average. However, Gladius Death or Glory also has a 94.26 % RTP version to beware of. There are 3 levels of Coin symbols - Gold, Silver, and Bronze - and the Collector symbol is not needed to win Coin prizes.
Gladius Death or Glory Features
The base game holds the same potential as the bonus game in Gladius Death or Glory, with Shield symbols revealing coin prizes, multipliers, or collector symbols. Let’s take a closer look at how it all works!
Shield Mystery Symbols
As mentioned in the intro, only Shield symbols, scatters, and stone-carved blanks (crossed swords) appear in the base game. The Shield symbols can reveal the following Coin prizes:
- Gold Coins worth 100x to 1,000x your stake.
- Silver Coins worth 5x to 50x your stake.
- Bronze Coins worth 1x to 4x your stake.
In addition, Shield symbols can reveal Special Symbols. Collector symbols collect and store the value of all Coin symbols present, but do not collect the value from other Collect symbols. All collected Coin positions turn into Shield symbols again, revealing new Coins or Special symbols. This process repeats indefinitely as long as there are unused Collector symbols present. To be clear, Collector symbols are not needed for regular Coin symbol wins.
Multiplier symbols are revealed with values of x2, x3, x4, x5, x10, or x20, boosting all present Coin and Collector symbol values after the Collector symbols have done their thing. As the round ends, all Coin and Collector symbol values are added together as your total win, multiplied by your bet.
Death or Glory Bonus
Scatters can land organically or be revealed by Shield symbols, and you need 3 on the same base game spin to trigger the Death or Glory Bonus Round. Scatters do not appear in the bonus round, but all Shield symbols that land become sticky and reset the free spins tally to 3 each time. The sticky Shield symbols reveal new Coin, Multiplier, or Collector symbols per spin, and the bonus round goes on until you land 3 consecutive spins with no new Shield symbols.
Gladius Death or Glory Bonus Buy (not UK)

Theme & Graphics
Gladius Death or Glory takes you into the bowels of an ancient Roman Coliseum, with the epic soundtrack building anticipation as you wait to fight for glory in the bonus round. The grid is filled with stone-carved symbols for the most part, and the bonus plays out in a somewhat worn-down arena with no audience to cheer you on. Overall, the cartoon-style visuals are nicely done, but the lack of human characters makes the experience less engaging than it could’ve been.

Our Verdict
Gladius Death or Glory is about as forgiving as a Coliseum filled with wild animals and hulking gladiators, or at least that’s how it feels when you’re braving through the base game dead spin galore. You can expect tons of screens filled with the gray and “boring” stone-carved crossed sword symbol. Once in a while, the game tosses you a Shield symbol that usually reveals a Coin symbol worth a whopping 1x your stake.
Single bonus symbols appear quite often to egg you on with the teaser effect, and overall, the base game is not my cup of tea. It’s just not engaging enough, despite larger payouts coming out of the blue on rare occasions. The multiplier symbol is usually involved when something significant happens, and the Collector symbol can also do some damage. However, it’s so rare to see these symbols in action in the base game that you may fall asleep before it happens.
The Ancient Rome gladiator theme could’ve been developed further too, although it gets the job done in a half-hearted sort of way. A gladiator character next to the grid would’ve gone a long way, and the bonus round arena looks like it's not been in use for decades. Overall, there is something “dead” about this game, with all the stone and the dead spins, and not humanizing it a bit seems like a fatal design flaw.
Anyway, things do pick up a bit when you finally trigger the bonus round, and it helps that you’re guaranteed to win per Shield. The sticky Shield symbols reveal different prizes or special symbols per spin, and things can heat up if you manage to rack up a significant amount of shields. The special symbols seemed to come along a bit more frequently too, and it’s hard to complain about the 15,000x potential. Some players may like the unusual base game in Gladius Death or Glory, but in my experience, the game just didn’t engage enough to make a lasting impression.
