It's debatable if players remember Tropical Tiki, but the developer has decided to release a reskin follow-up. Frogs & Bugs is the exact same game, and the 6x3 grid is placed in the middle of a pond at night. The reels are filled with frogs and fruits actually, and the only bug in sight is depicted on the scatter symbol. The visuals are decent enough anyhow, but there is nothing new to see here outside of the skin.

The winning symbols accumulate per tumble as before, and scatters also accumulate to possibly trigger the bonus round. The grid expands with 2 extra rows in the feature, but these come with blocked positions. The positions are unblocked one by one at random per free spin, and you can win up to 3,000x your stake also in this follow-up. Overall, we are a bit disappointed by the wasted opportunity for improvements, but at least players now have a choice between two themes.

Frogs & Bugs Slot Features

The symbols pay between 0.16 to 2 x your stake for 6 of a kind wins, and 3 different frogs serve as the premium symbols. There are no Wild symbols in this game, but the low symbol values are somewhat augmented by the 729 ways to win system.

Even more so via the Winning Symbols Tumble feature, which is the central feature in this game. Winning symbols drop to the lowest possible position as all other symbols except scatter symbols are removed. The winning symbols remain in play as a new batch of symbols drop down to fill the empty positions, and this repeats if you add to the win and/or land a scatter. The win is summed up when you hit a non-winning tumble.

The Bonus Round triggers from at least 4 scatters in view, and these can land all at once or accumulate in the tumble sequence. The scatters appear on reels 2 to 5 only though, and you win 8 free spins no matter the amount of triggering scatters. The scatters pay 5x your stake for 4 triggering scatters, and the scatter payout increases up to 35x your stake for 10 in view.

The grid expands to 6x5 during the bonus round, which means that you’ll benefit from up to 6,400 ways to win. The 2 top rows are blocked as the bonus round starts (which amounts to 12 positions), however, and one random position is unblocked per free spin that follows. This means that the number of win ways increases per spin, and up to 8 positions can be unlocked at best since there are no ways to win extra spins.

Non-UK players can purchase the bonus round for 100x the stake, and the top-tier Bonus Buy RTP of 96.2 % is a bit lower than the overall top-tier RTP. You always get the minimum of 4 triggering scatters when you purchase the feature, and there will be no tumble wins on the triggering spin.

Review Summary

Both the Tiki theme from the original game, and the frogs theme has its charm for sure, but both are also on the simpler side of what we know this developer is capable of. The developer had a chance to build on the first game instead of releasing a simple reskin job, but that chance has been wasted. The winning symbols tumble feature is still somewhat entertaining though, but why not throw some kind of multiplier system into the mix as well to spice things up.

The symbol values are pretty low after all, so a multiplier seems like a good idea if there is a future follow-up. It still doesn’t make sense that you can unlock only 8 of 12 positions in the bonus round, and the possibility of getting extra spins would have amended that issue. It is what it is, however, and what it is is a decent, but mediocre, shelf-filler reskin that gives players a different option when it comes to the visuals. The 3,000x potential cements this impression, and it wouldn’t take too much effort to make solid improvements to this concept.
