We’ve been following the dynamic symbol splitting Gem series with some interest, as it does provide entertaining gameplay overall. If you’re looking for tons of personality and antics, this series might not be for you however, but Forge of Gems builds nicely on the core concepts utilized in the 3 predecessor releases. The forgery setting is perhaps an attempt to compensate for the aloof visual impression, but it doesn’t really make a difference.
The whole series comes across as cold and superficial in the visual department, just like the surface of the polished gemstones on the reels. It’s fitting in that sense, but if you’re looking for warm and fuzzy you’ve come to the wrong slot. Cascades unlock modifier symbols from the top Forge Reel, of which there are 5, and the multiplier keeps building in the bonus round. This can lead to payouts up to 20,000x your stake.
Forge of Gems Slot Features
The 4 premium gemstone symbols pay between 0.5 and 1 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins, and the Diamond Wild steps in for pay symbols to help create wins. The wild also pays 3x your stake for 5 of a kind. Winning symbols are removed via the Cascading mechanic, and the process repeats as long as you keep winning.
The Forge Reel slides in special modifier symbols on every spin, but you need the cascading feature to remove symbols below for these modifiers to drop down. This is how they become activated, and here’s an overview of what you can expect:
- Multiplier - increases the win multiplier by +1, but it resets between each paid round.
- Vertical Wilds - turns all the symbols on the same reel into wilds except scatters.
- Horizontal Wilds - turns all matching symbols on the same row into wilds.
- Vertical Splitter - splits all matching symbols on the same reel in two, expanding the row and increasing the number of win ways.
- Horizontal Splitter - acts as a wild, and splits all symbols on the same row except scatters.
- Blank symbol - does nothing, but is removed when cascading.
The Red Jewel scatter can appear anywhere, and you need to rack up at least 3 in the same Cascading sequence to trigger the Gembox feature. This Gembox feature awards a spin that can lead to an instant prize or the Bonus Round:

- 4 scatters award 30x your stake, or 10 or 15 free spins.

The Forge Reel is void of blank symbols in the bonus round, and a multiplier symbol is guaranteed to appear on the forge reel per free spin. Any multiplier you’ve racked up on the triggering cascading sequence will be carried over from the base game, and the multiplier never resets as long as the bonus round lasts.

Review Summary
As polished as the visual presentation in this series tends to be, it also comes across as a bit too cold and generic. The forgery setting paradoxically accentuates this notion in Forge of Gems, but the game runs like a well-oiled machine when you hold down the spacebar to get turbo spins. The Forge Reel modifiers are clever enough, and they can pull together to land you pretty solid base game wins.
You will most likely need to rack up a multiplier for that to happen though, given the rather low symbol values. However, up to 36,288 ways to win will also help, of course. We’re not really sure if the whole Gembox feature is such a good idea though, or more specifically the ‘consolation prize’ you might be stuck with instead of the bonus round. The 20,000x potential is solid, and this is a finely tuned and well-balanced installment overall.
