Finn and the Dragon Tales Review
Finn began his journey in 2017 with a charming slot that introduced players to the unique Swirly Spin mechanic and a lighthearted, low-volatility experience. Over the years, it was followed by other installments, each one keeping the same tone and easy-going gameplay intact. But with Finn and the Dragon Tales, a completely different new direction has been taken.
This chapter transforms the usual cheerful adventure into a darker, epic fantasy quest. The grid is larger, the features are more compelling, the volatility is no longer that forgiving, and the winning capabilities are now higher than ever.
Yet at the heart of it all remains the legacy Swirly Spin mechanic, now with an enlargened 7x7 grid. Symbols enter the reels in a clockwise spiral pattern, starting from the bottom-left corner and ending in the center. Wins occur in clusters, when three or more matching symbols appear in a straight vertical or horizontal line, without gaps.
Whenever a winning combination occurs, the Avalanche feature kicks in. Winning symbols disappear, while the remaining ones follow the spiral path to fill the empty spaces, and then new symbols are added to the reels from the bottom-left starting point. This continues as long as new winning combinations keep forming.
As we head over to the paytable, the reels of the Finn and the Dragon Tales slot machine are populated with a total of nine regular pay symbols, divided into three colored groups, red, blue, and green. Each group consists of three gems of different sizes, and payouts for clusters of 7 symbols range between 0.3x to 1.05x your bet.
Things get more interesting when dragon features come into play. The pay system temporarily shifts, introducing scatter wins. Payouts change too, awarding from 0.65x up to 2.5x your bet for combinations of 41+ symbols.
When it comes to numbers, the Finn and the Dragon Tales online slot takes a significant departure from its predecessors. The volatility is now high, and each spin can deliver up to 3,828x the stake – by far the highest max win we’ve seen in the series to date.
Finn and the Dragon Tales RTP depends on where you play, with three available settings for operators to choose from, which are 88.03%, 94.03%, and 96.04%. Be sure to look through the rules when selecting a casino to play at.
Finn and the Dragon Tales Features
Gameplay-wise, Finn and the Dragon Tales comes packed with a variety of bonus features to keep players engaged throughout the session. Without further ado, let’s break them down.
Wild symbols
Wild symbols in Finn and the Dragon Tales are created as part of specific win outcomes. Whenever you land a win consisting of 3 or 4 matching symbols without a Wild already involved, the Wild x1 Feature or the Wild x2 Feature can be triggered.
The symbols that formed the win are removed, and a Wild is inserted into the grid before the next Avalanche proceeds. A 3-symbol win generates a Wild x1, placed in the middle of the cleared line. A 4-symbol win creates a Wild x2, inserted instead of the second winning symbol.
Wild symbols substitute for all regular symbols in winning combinations, except for the Dragon and Free Spins Key symbols. If multiple wilds appear in a line but don’t contribute to a win, they transform into the highest-paying symbol. If a Wild x2 lands on a position with an existing x1, it replaces it.
Dragon Feature
Triggered by a win of 5 or more matching symbols without a Wild, the Dragon Feature replaces the cleared symbols with a Dragon symbol before the next Avalanche begins. The Dragon symbol comes with a multiplier of x1, x2, or x5, depending on the length of the triggering win – 5, 6, or 7 symbols respectively.
The Dragon's color is linked to the color group of the original winning symbols. Once it lands, all other symbols on the reels from that same color group are transformed into a single matching symbol, generating a scatter-style win.
If more than one Dragon is present, each multiplier applies only to its own group’s transformed win. If a Dragon lands over an existing Wild, it replaces it.
Random Wilds
The Random Wilds feature is triggered after a scatter win, which follows a Dragon feature. Once the scatter win is cleared and the Avalanche resets the grid, the Dragon symbols currently on the reels add 2 to 4 random Wild symbols on top of other symbols.
These Wilds can appear with multipliers ranging from x2 to x10. Wilds won’t land where there’s already a Wild, a Dragon, or the Free Spins Key symbol. If there are not enough available positions, the number of Wilds spawned is adjusted accordingly.
Free Spins
Finn and the Dragon Tales free spins are triggered when the Free Spins Key symbol, which always starts in the bottom-left corner of the grid, reaches the center of the reels via Avalanches. This symbol is immune to all other features and cannot be removed or transformed during gameplay.
Once the Key reaches the center, Free Spins are activated, and a Dragon symbol is placed at the center of the reels. The number of Free Spins and the type of Dragon depends on which keyhole zone the Key lands in:
- Bronze Zone – 5 Free Spins with a Green Dragon;
- Silver Zone – 8 Free Spins with a Blue Dragon;
- Gold Zone – 10 Free Spins with a Red Dragon.
At the start of each Free Spin, the central Dragon transforms all regular symbols from its color group into one matching type, triggering a scattered win. Basically, each free spin is a guaranteed win. A Free Spins Multiplier is also activated and starts at x1 for every spin.
During Free Spins, only gemstone and rock symbols appear on the grid. Before each scattered win is evaluated, all rock symbols are destroyed, revealing Treasure Chests that can deliver certain boosts:
- Multiplier Treasure Chest – Adds x1, x2, x5, or x10 to the Free Spins Multiplier.
- Cash Prize Treasure Chest – Awards a payout of 0.25x, 0.5x, or 1x your bet.
- Extra Free Spins Treasure Chest – Grants 3 additional Free Spins.
- Extra Dragon Symbol Treasure Chest – Adds a new Dragon symbol that fills empty reel spots with matching regular symbols and then transforms them for another scattered win.
Elevate Feature
The Elevate Feature in Finn and the Dragon Tales acts as a buy option, allowing players to pay a certain cost to trigger one of the game’s features.
- Wild Hunt – For 5x the bet, guarantees that the next spin will result in at least one winning combination. Has a default RTP of 96.07%;
- Single Dragon – For 10x the bet, one Dragon symbol is guaranteed to activate in the spin. Has a default RTP of 96.04%;
- Double Dragon – For 50x the bet, two Dragon symbols are guaranteed to activate in the spin. Has a default RTP of 96.06%;
- Gold, Silver, Bronze – For 100x the bet, the Free Spins Key symbol is guaranteed to land in one of the three keyhole zones. Has a default RTP of 96.07%;
- Gold Zone – For 300x the bet, the Free Spins Key symbol is guaranteed to land directly in the gold keyhole zone. Has a default RTP of 96.02%.

Our Verdict
I’ll be honest – I've never been a fan of the earlier Finn games. Sure, the Swirly Spin mechanic was always unique and intriguing, but the light-hearted vibe and low volatility with equally low winning opportunities just didn’t do it for me. Finn and the Dragon Tales is different. This installment finally gives the mechanic the treatment it deserves, and I genuinely love everything about it. Well, almost.
I think it absolutely nailed it here. The gameplay is rich and varied, with Wilds, Multipliers, Dragons, Scatter Wins, and different types of Free Spins. And the presentation… man, it’s just phenomenal. From the textures to the animations to the shifting soundtracks, it all feels perfectly crafted and insanely polished.
If there’s one downside, it’s the max win. While 3,828x is ten times more than what previous Finn slots offered, it still feels a little underwhelming for a game with high volatility. But honestly? I don’t care. Everything else is top-notch. Hands down the best Finn game to date, period.
