Megaways Review
We have been eagerly awaiting this release, as we enjoyed the original game. Megaways doesn't disappoint when it comes to features, and it still revolves around the multiplier upgrade system. A few extra modifiers have been added in this follow-up release, which is always welcome, including max megaways that can combine with the multiplier upgrading spin.
You get a similar visual experience, with colorful gemstones and diamonds on the dynamic Megaways grid. It comes with up to 117,649 ways to win, and the persistent multipliers can deliver up to x729 boosts in the bonus round. There is an enhanced super bonus round as well, but the 10,000x potential is half of what you get in the original game. This is the only drawback, as everything else is pretty much top notch.
Megaways Slot Features
The gemstones and top-tier diamond symbol pay between 2 and 50 x your stake for 6 of a kind wins, and all winning symbols are removed via the Cascading mechanic. New and/or existing symbols will then drop down to fill the gaps, and this process repeats for as long as your winning streak lasts. You can land Wild symbols on reels 2 to 5, and wilds step in for pay symbols to help complete and/or improve wins.
You can land question mark Mystery Symbols anywhere on the grid, and all instances of this symbol turns into the same randomly chosen pay symbol. The mystery symbols can land both in the base game and in the bonus round.
In addition to regular wilds, you can also land Star Wilds that do the same as the regular wilds. However, the star wilds also come with a multiplier attached, and this activates a global win multiplier. If you land more than one star multiplier, the multipliers are multiplied together before being applied to any win. When the randomly triggered Spin activates you are guaranteed to land 2+ star wilds.
The Max Megaways feature can trigger at random times as well, and this maxes out the grid with 7 positions per reel and 117,649 win ways. You can also combine the Max Megaways feature with the Spin feature, which gives you a maxed out spin with 2+ guaranteed star symbols.
You need 3, 4, 5, or 6 scatters in view to trigger the Bonus Round, and this gives you 8, 10, 12, or 14 free spins, respectively. You can also trigger a Super version of the feature if one of the triggering scatters are red. Wild Stars activate a persistent x2 win multiplier above any reel they appear on, and the multiplier can be upgraded to x3 if another wild star lands on the same reel.
Since the win multipliers are multiplied together, it means that up to an x729 win multiplier is possible. You win +3 extra spins if you activate the win multiplier on all 6 reels. The Super Bonus Round is an enhanced version of the regular bonus round, increasing your chances for larger payouts. That’s what it says in the paytable, at least.
The Bet (bonus buy) button is available, but not in the UK for sure. You can buy a Spin for 30x the stake with an RTP of 96.16 % (organic hit rate is 1 in 123 spins). The regular bonus round will set you back 100x your stake (RTP of 96.49 % and 1 in 350 spins organic hit rate). The super version costs 300x your stake, and comes with an RTP of 96.46 % as well.
The 200 Spins Megaways Slot Experience
You get a decent taste of the base game, including a Spin purchase, before we buy and trigger the Super Bonus Round around the 1-minute mark. We managed to activate all reel multipliers after a while, which prolonged the feature, and it plays out for the remainder of the 3-minute highlights video.
Review Summary
We still believe the original deserves a higher SlotRank than it has, and we hope this Megaways version will serve as a “tide that lifts both ships”, so to speak. Megaways is very similar to the original game, but the bigger and bolder format makes this a highly attractive follow-up. The multiplier system is still going strong in all stages of the game, and it can lead to very solid payouts in combination with the dynamic win ways grid.
Unfortunately in that regard, has decided to cut the original 20,000x potential in half for the Megaways release. It’s usually the other way around, but it’s hard to judge it one way or the other without hit frequency stats (which aren’t available). Being able to win 10,000x your stake is still decent, however, and on par with most Megaways installments. We had a very good time testing Megaways, and we are pretty sure fans of the original will love this follow-up release.
