Cluster Slide Review
ELK’s Gravity mechanic has struggled a bit to break fully through to the mainstream. That being said, we have a strong feeling their latest installment, Cluster Slide, is about to change that forever. Grid slots don’t come much better than this in our humble opinion. Fans can look forward to a similar theme, but with improved visuals, innovative mechanics and superior stats.
The wobbly, furry, sliding gel monsters might look innocent enough when they pop open their eyes as part of a winning cluster. However, before you know it, they will cannibalize each other to grow in size. 5 unique modifier wilds conspire with the high hit rate to conceal the somewhat volatile nature of this game, and you’ll hardly have time to blink when this thing fires on all cylinders. Sliding into Jellyton was a joyride for us, and this release deserves to be a massive hit.
Cluster Slide Slot Features
Whenever you land a cluster of at least 5 matching symbols, the Sliding Avalanche feature kicks in. Winning symbols are first removed, and the remaining symbols slide into place according to the tilted reel set and the laws of gravity. A fresh batch of symbols then drop from above to fill the remaining gaps, and the process repeats as long as you keep winning.
Wilds abound in this game, and the regular pink/blue ‘W’ wild can land at any time to help you form winning clusters. Winning symbols are collected in the Generator Meter above the grid, but you need to fill it within an Avalanche sequence, otherwise it will reset. Anyway, when filled, 1 of 5 Modifier Wilds are awarded:
- Big – expands a random symbol to size 2x2.
- Random – transforms 2-4 regular symbols into wilds.
- Multiplier – increases the win multiplier by +1.
- Upgrading – upgrades a random symbol type to a higher tier.
- Removing – removes all instances of one symbol type from the grid.
You can also land all 5 modifier wilds organically during gameplay, but their respective features are only triggered when part of a winning cluster. If you manage to trigger all 5 wild features in a single Avalanche sequence, the regular win multiplier you’ve built up is boosted by +5. The new multiplier will apply to all subsequent winning clusters.
You need 3 of the golden ‘B’ bonus scatter to trigger the Wild Drops Bonus Round. You get 3 free spins (or free drops, if you wish), and all ‘B’ scatters turn wild on the first drop. You also get 3 extra 1x1 wilds on the first drop. You then get two 2x2 wilds on the second free drop, while the third drop gives you a single 3x3 sized wild.
ELK’s X-iter feature can be utilized in jurisdictions that allow the Bonus Buy option, which excludes the UK. The regular bonus round will cost you 100x your stake, and you can also purchase some other wild features. In addition, you can pay 300x for a Super Bonus Round which gives you 5 drops instead of 3. You also get 3 and 4 2x2 wilds on the 2 last spins, respectively, which almost guarantees a larger payout.
The 200 Spins Cluster Slide Slot Experience
When we first laid eyes on the tilted reel set, we knew we were in for a special gravity mechanics treat. As fun as the base game was, for the sake of the highlights video, we decided to take advantage of the X-iter feature and purchase the Super Bonus Round. This happens after around 30 seconds, and you can see how it all played out below.
Review Summary
Cluster Slide cannot avoid a comparison, but ELK’s game stands firmly on its own tilted reel set. The pace and the organic flow of the game is perfectly tuned to the excellent soundtrack, and there is hardly a boring moment once you dive into the monster poppin’ multiplier action. You’re witnessing visual and mechanical perfection here, and the potential is more than twice of what’s on offer in the source of inspiration.
Only 3 free drops might not sound like much, but many times each drop will explode into lengthy thrill rides of pure multiplier boosting joy. Of course, the volatility will kick your butt at times also, but that’s a whopping we’re more than happy to endure to enjoy a game like this. We highly recommend testing the Super Bonus Round (if applicable), as those 2 final spins can really rock your world to the tune of 10,000x your stake.
