After experiencing so many ‘dark side’ games lately, it was a breath of fresh air to encounter some lighthearted slapstick entertainment. Canny the Can and the Book of Time is lighthearted only on the cartoonish surface, however, as this is a volatile game with a special feature. The charming tin can makes a welcome comeback as well.

The animated Canny character is accompanied by a tiny mouse, and the mouse is the top-tier pay symbol. The retro visuals add to the charm, and you get to see a more cultural side in the bonus rounds. The special feature comes with up to 3 starting special symbols, but you can get plenty more as well. The biggest surprise is the mysterious ‘What Time is it?’ bonus round, and both features can award up to 10,000x your stake.

The premium symbols pay between 50 and 250 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins, and the Book symbols serve double duty as both Wild and Scatter. As a wild, the book symbol steps in for pay symbols to help complete wins, and as a scatter the book triggers the bonus round.

Whenever a special symbol appears on at least 3 reels, the symbols expand to cover the entire reels for a full payline payout. You get +5 extra spins from landing 3+ scatters during the feature, and this also gives you +1 special symbol. All symbols can become special, and there are no more extra spins after that.

The ‘What Time is it?’ bonus round triggers from 3 Clock Man scatters in view, and this gives you 10 free spins. There are 3 clocks placed above the 3 middle reels, and they show a different time per spin. Whenever a Clock Activator symbol appears anywhere on the 3 middle reels, you get Wild Multiplier Clock symbols that spread from the top and fill all positions until it also replaces the triggering symbol. The wild multiplier is determined by the clock above, and it will be between x2 and x12. Multiplier values are added together if more than one wild is part of the same win.

Review Summary

It was nice to see Canny the Can again first of all, and the retro slapstick cartoonish presentation is as charming as ever. The soundtrack fits the bill perfectly, and the spin pace is excellent all the way. Canny the Can and the Book of Time comes with up to 3 special symbols from the get-go in the bonus round, and single spin payouts of 5,000x your stake is possible if the mouse fills the screen.

The twist is not highly original perhaps, but it kind of feels like it since everything else sticks out from the norm like a sore thumb. What is original, however, is the fact that you get a full-blown spreading multiplier wilds bonus round as well, and it too comes with a 10,000x potential. It might be too ‘out there’ for some, but we found this to be a highly enjoyable and solid release.
