With Book of Gems, the developers arrive late to the Megaways party, and we were certainly curious to find out what they would bring to the table. Combining the popular BTG engine with the Book of... concept in their debut title is daring enough, but unfortunately the whole thing falls apart rather quickly upon further inspection.
A glance at the math model is enough, as 3,125 win ways in a Megaways game seems like a bad joke. Don’t even get us started on the measly 1,000x potential, which insults 2 popular genres in one fell swoop, and the fact that nothing new or exciting is featured here. The ancient egypt theme combined with the classic book slot bonus round is what you get here, with some ineffective extra paylines to boot.
Book of Gems Megaways Features
The book is the wild symbol in this game, and it can land on reels 2, 3 and 4 only. It will step in for all regular pay symbols to help you form winning combos, and you trigger the all-important bonus round when you land 3 book wilds on the 3 middle reels. This also gives you a 2x win before the free spins feature commences, and you get 10 free spins to start with.
As is usually the case with book slots, a symbol is randomly chosen up front from the book. This chosen symbol becomes the special expanding symbol during the feature. The expanding symbol doesn't need to land adjacent to win, but you need at least 3 instances of it on 3 different reels. Review Summary
The Megaways debut is also their first real attempt at a Ra clone, at least technically. They did release another similar game last year, but this game came with a chosen scatter win symbol instead of expanding symbols. Anyway, with Book of Gems Megaways, the team has done everything “by the book”, and a bit too much so for our liking.
No twist has been added to the bonus round, and the theme is the same old dusty ancient egypt expedition once again. At the most, you’re looking at 1,000x wins if you fill the screen with the expanded Explorer symbol (who’s a dead ringer for Tom Hardy by the way) during the bonus round. This is no less than an insult to any player with an iota of experience with either the book slot mechanics and/or the Megaways engine, not least when you factor in the high volatility.
