Well, someone had to do it sooner or later. We have been waiting for a developer to “go there”, and make a ‘book mechanic’ slot titled Book of Books. This is how many people refer to the Bible, so this release may upset both ‘book slot’ and Christian purists. The team likes to do things their own way, and Book of Books is far from your usual run of the mill ‘book slot’ release.

The forest setting is one thing, and you also get a trio of medieval musicians performing the soundtrack “live” for you. It’s all done in the quirky cartoon style they are known for, and you’ll collect power ups for your next bonus round each time you land a near-miss duo of scatters. You can get extra expanding symbols this way, and expanding symbols are chosen randomly per free spin. The 10,000x potential is 2x what most ‘book slots’ offer, and this one is well worth checking out if you’re looking for something different.

Book of Books Slot Features

You can turn on the Golden Bet feature between base game spins if you wish, and it will increase your regular stake by 50 %. This increases your bonus round chances by an unspecified number. The RTP of the game is not affected by this ante bet feature, however.

The premium symbols pay between 20 and 150 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins, and 3 quirky characters are the top-tier symbols. The gold coin Wild symbol steps in for pay symbols to help complete wins, and it pays the same as the top-tier King symbol if you land 2 to 5 wilds on the same payline.

The Book scatter is separate from the wild symbol in this game, and landing exactly 2 book scatters in view adds a Power Up to your next bonus round session. The power ups can be extra expanding symbols, 1 to 2 extra free spins, or +1 +2 added to the multiplier that boosts expanding wins.

You need 3+ scatters in view to trigger the Bonus Round, and the number of triggering scatters determines the size of the bonus round grid. You get a 5x3 grid with 10 paylines from 3 scatters, a 5x4 grid with 20 paylines from 4 scatters, and a 5x5 grid with 40 paylines from 5 scatters. You get 7 free spins by default, but the number can be higher depending on what kind of Power Ups you have collected in the base game.

All your collected Power Ups will be activated in the bonus round, and everything resets once the feature has played out. You don’t get the usual expanding symbol selection up front in this game. Instead, symbols are chosen to become expanding scatter pay symbols randomly as each free spin plays out. If enough instances land anywhere in view, the chosen symbol (or symbols) expand to give you full reel payouts.

The full reel payouts come after regular wins, but keep in mind that all full reel payouts are calculated with 10 paylines no matter the size of the grid. You retrigger the feature by landing 2 to 5 scatters in view, and this works as follows:

• 2 scatters give you +1 extra spins and a random power up.
• 3 scatters give you +3 extra spins and a random power up.
• 4 scatters give you +5 extra spins and a random power up. This also upgrades the grid to size 5x4 (unless it’s already there, or beyond).
• 5 scatters give you +7 extra spins and a random power up. This also upgrades the grid to 5x5 (unless it’s already there).

The Bonus Buy Menu is available in some jurisdictions, but not in the UK for sure. It comes with 3 options as follows:

• Pay 120x your stake for a 5x3 grid with 10 paylines.
• Pay 250x your stake for a 5x4 grid with 20 paylines.
• Pay 500x your stake for a 5x5 grid with 40 paylines.

Review Summary

There are more than enough ‘book slots’ being churned out each year that stick to the classic recipe with very little room for experimentation. They are not that kind of developer, however, and Book of Books is a highly original and fun installment in the popular genre. The forest setting is refreshing, and we also like the band of medieval characters jamming together around the grid. The title may suggest that this is the “ultimate” book slot, but it’s a bit too quirky and “far out” to dethrone the top-tier installments.

Some ‘book slot’ purists may frown upon the liberties they have taken here, while other players will love it. The power up system adds unpredictability, not least combined with varying expanding symbols, and this is one of very few, if any, book slots where you don’t want the bonus round to trigger asap. The longer you grind, the more juicy it gets, and we got plenty of expanding scatter wins in our test session at least. Book of Books might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but we will certainly return for more on occasions.
