You’ll meet an alchemist looking for an apprentice (you) in this game. There is always plenty happening here, but you’ll feel like you’re caught in a hamster wheel at times, because the modifiers will often fail to deliver any real benefits.
Visually, it all looks like a cute cartoon or computer game, but the math model underneath is quite brutal. The volatility is high, and you can win only 1,500x your stake on a single spin here. The main attraction is the bonus round. Collected symbols, modified or not, are released on every 5th spin, but unfortunately this is also usually frustratingly ineffective, just like the modifiers many times are in this game.
Features
The plant with teeth, and its giant tongue hanging out, is the wild symbol in this game. It will step in for all regular pay symbols like wilds usually do. However, wilds will also expand to cover the full reels whenever they land on the bottom position.
The Book of Spells can land on reel 3 only, and it will also serve as a wild when part of a winning combo. More importantly however, it triggers the Book of Spells feature whenever it lands. You will then get a randomly selected “magic spell” from the book, and these are modifiers like extra wilds, multipliers up to 5x or symbol transformation (low value to higher value). Spells come with a potency rating from 1 to 3, where higher ratings means greater rewards.
You trigger the Free Spins feature by landing 3, 4 or 5 scatters anywhere on the same spin. This awards 10, 15 or 20 free spins respectively, and all symbols on reel 3 are collected in the cauldron during bonus round play. You need to collect 15 symbols to trigger the Cauldron Combo Bonus feature (happens every 5th spin in other words), and this means that all the collected symbols return to the reels for a new win calculation.
The Magic Book comes in an “expanded edition” during the free spins feature, as you will now benefit from additional spells. Wilds can be added to the cauldron, low value symbols can be converted to higher value, extra free spins can be given and you can get a global multiplier boost. Of course, you will also benefit from the regular base game spells, and you get 5, 10 or 15 new spins when you land 3, 4 or 5 scatters on a free spin, respectively.
Finally, non-UK players can buy the bonus round at any time, and you can choose between 10, 15 or 20 free spins. The latter will set you back 180x your stake, and it’s definitely something to consider for impatient players since the organic way can take a while in this game.
The Experience
Nothing much happened for us in the base game, so after a while we decided to try our luck by purchasing the bonus round. Don’t get confused by the different symbols, as these represent only the number of spins. It’s the same bonus round either way. We went with 20 free spins, and you can see how it all played out in the video below.
Review Summary
This game comes across as a somewhat half-baked end product that hasn’t been properly thought through. The biggest problem is the lengthy feature animations that lead nowhere. What’s the point of being awarded a multiplier boost if there is no winning combination to apply it to? Questions like that will abound as you keep getting annoyed by the tedious base game grind.
The bonus round takes it up a notch because of the symbol release on every 5 spins, as well as the extra spell modifiers. However, so many times the modifiers are impotent, and they just feel like an annoying waste of time. The spell book doesn't land very often in our experience, and it can take ages to trigger the free spins. The 7,000x potential (total bonus round win) combined with high volatility looks good on paper, but in practice this game is both unforgiving and annoying.
