Barbarian Gold Review
Venture forth with a powerful Barbarian in his quest for riches in a medieval world filled with danger. The cartoonish style might not be for everyone, but the math model packs a punch. Barbarian Gold features a 2 level free spins round and expanding wilds in both the base game and the bonus round.
The game features 5 reels, 3 rows, and 20 paylines, and is accessible across all devices. The base game includes expanding wilds, which appear frequently for a medium to high volatility game. While the base game offers a maximum of 500x your stake, the free spins bonus round allows you to win up to 10,000x your stake. The expanding wilds will assist until the feature triggers.
The bonus round was triggered a few times during testing, and was also bought a few times to get to the second level. The first level is solid, and the big difference is that you cannot get extra spins in level 1, but you’ll benefit from the progressive multiplier.
What are the bonus features?
Barbarian Gold isn’t feature-heavy, but what's available can lead to significant payouts. The main attraction is the bonus round, but let's begin with the base game features.
The wild symbol is a shield, substituting for all regular symbols. When a wild symbol lands on the top position of the reel, it will drop down to cover the whole reel, creating multiple wild reels for base game wins.
Free spins in Barbarian Gold
The free spins bonus round has 2 levels. Trigger it by landing 3, 4, or 5 animal skull scatters on the same spin. You start with the Lava Cave bonus round, receiving 8, 10, or 12 free spins (based on the number of triggering scatters).
The expanding wild feature is active here. When a wild lands in a top position on the reels, it expands and increases the progressive multiplier by +1. The multiplier doesn't reset and continues to build with each expanding wild.
To reach the next level, land 3, 4, or 5 scatters within the Lava Cave free spins feature. This triggers the Gold Cave bonus round, awarding 4, 5, or 6 free spins, respectively. Here, the multiplier also increases by landing expanding wilds, and you get 1 extra free spin each time.
The bonus round can be bought. You get 8 spins for 100x, 10 spins for 150x, and 12 spins for 200x your stake.
How to play
The game is easy to play, but here's a walkthrough. The menu opens the game settings and history.
The menu is in the top left-hand side corner, and it takes you right into the game settings at first. Here you can toggle on/off the background music and sound effects, and also choose if you want fast play, spacebar to spin and the splash screen when the game loads.
The ? icon below the reels opens another set of menus on the right-hand side. The “i” icon menu contains the game rules. Click the trophy icon to access the paytable.
Check each symbol's worth and read about the bonus features. Divide each value by the number of paylines (20) to see how much each symbol combination pays per total stake. The Barbarian is the highest value symbol, paying 12.5x your stake for 5 on a payline.
Click the coin stacks icon to choose your bet level between 20p and £20 per spin, and you can also choose if you want to see cash or coin values displayed when you play. Set up the autoplay feature with between 5 and 999 autospins, with options for automatic stops.

The 200 Spins Barbarian Gold Experience
The barbarian theme might not appeal to everyone, but the math model and bonus round potential are interesting. The bet level was set to £1 per spin, and the autoplay feature was loaded up for 200 spins.
The base game keeps you going towards the free spins feature. You need the expanding wild symbols to progress, as most spins are dead or minor wins.
Expanding wilds appear frequently, often two at a time. Sometimes, there were three, and other times only one. The wilds were included in all larger base game wins, usually between 10 and 20 times the stake.
One base game win was 46x, due to a double expanding wild on the first 2 reels. Overall, it's not hard to stay afloat, and the medium to high volatility is fitting. The bonus round was triggered after around 60 spins, but only won 13.70x the stake (including the triggering spin) with 1 wild in 8 spins.
Towards the end, the bonus round triggered again, with more luck. Two double expanding wilds in the feature increased the multiplier to 5x, winning a total of 108x the stake.
Getting to level 2 of the bonus round was attempted with bought free spins, but gave up after 5 tries. Wins ranged from 6.5x to 436x the stake, never close to triggering the Gold Cave bonus round. Getting there is not easy.
Review Summary
The visuals might take time to adjust to, but Barbarian Gold is a game that can grow on you. Potential is allocated to the bonus round, as you can "only" win up to 500x your stake in the base game. Reaching the Gold Cave level lengthens the bonus round, building a solid multiplier, but it's not easily triggered.
A 9x multiplier was achieved in the Lava Cave bonus round, with a total free spin win of 436x the stake. Minute bonus round wins can occur as easily as bigger wins. The base game is somewhat entertaining with the expanding wilds.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Expanding wilds in the base game | Max bet is only £20 per spin |
| 2 level free spins feature with progressive multiplier | |
| Medium to high volatility and 10,000x max win potential |

If you have an appetite for a bit of gore, brutality and violence, you’ll have no problem finding slots in that category. Here we’ll present you with some of the better ones we know about, and you can play the free demo and learn more about each game by following the links below.
Conan - comes with 3 different and very exciting bonus rounds, as well as 4 bonus features. The visuals are well-done as usual, and you’ll see a 3D animated Conan fight a massive snake in front of the reels. You can win up to 1,008x your stake here, and there is hardly a boring moment in this game.
Barbarian Fury - is all about the xNudge mechanics, as you get a progressively increasing multiplier for every wild nudge in the game. The volatility is quite brutal here, more so than the game at hand, but you can also win up to 8,785x your stake. The xNudge multiplier does not reset in the bonus round, which can benefit you in a massive way if you’re lucky.
Vikings - is a branded title based around the hit TV series by the same name. The game comes with stunning audiovisuals, and you’ll definitely recognize some of the characters from the show. There are plenty of exciting bonus features in this game too, and the setup changes to 7 reels, 5 rows and 78,125 ways to win during the bonus round.
