Adventures Of Doubloon Island Review
We were certainly impressed by HyperHold debut title, , and we therefore had our hopes up for their next release. While both games revolve around the HyperHold Respins/Jackpot feature, Adventures Of Doubloon Island is very different from its predecessor.
The math model has been watered down significantly, and the insane wild win potential from the first game is long gone. The buccaneer theme comes across as generic, and it's just not as intriguing as the secret agent theme spun around the first game. Medium volatility means a somewhat lighter touch, but the price you pay in terms of across-the-board reduced potential seems overly steep.
Adventures Of Doubloon Island Features
The female pirate is the wild symbol in this game, and she can land in 1x1, 1x2 and 1x3 sizes on any reel. She is also the highest paying symbol, landing you 50x your stake for 5 of a kind. This means that a full screen of wilds is worth 1,000x your stake, which can hardly compare to the 12,500x on offer in the predecessor title.
You can choose to play with a Win Booster active, but this will increase your stake by 1.5x per spin. The upside is that cash prizes are doubled in value during the HyperHold feature, and the 4 jackpots are also increased a bit.
You need to land 6+ HyperHold symbols anywhere to trigger the Respins Strike feature, and this gives you 3 respins to start with. All triggering cash symbols become sticky, and landing new sticky cash symbols resets the respins tally to 3 again. The respins continue as long as you don’t run out of spins, or until the whole screen is filled with nothing but cash coins.
The cash symbols are worth between 1x and 50x your stake without the Win Booster, but the values increase to 2-100x your total stake if the Win Booster is on. There are 4 fixed jackpots up for grabs here too, and you win 3 of them by landing jackpot symbols. You can win more than one in the same feature, and they are worth the following:
- Mini Jackpot equals 25x, or 33.33x with the Win Booster on.
- Minor Jackpot equals 100x, or 133.33x with the Win Booster on.
- Major Jackpot equals 500x, or 666.66x with the Win Booster on.
- Mega Jackpot equals 2,000, or 3,333.33x with the Win Booster on. You win this by filling the screen with coin and/or jackpot symbols.
You trigger the Free Spins round when you land at least 3 treasure chest scatters anywhere. This gives you 10, 15 or 20 free spins for 3, 4 or 5 scatters, respectively, and all low value symbols are removed during the bonus round. This means that only premium symbols, wilds and HyperHold coins will land, and the symbols land in stacks to further increase your chances for bigger wins. The free spins can be retriggered the same way you triggered it in the first place.
The 200 Spins Adventures Of Doubloon Island Experience
Nothing too exciting happened for us until we triggered the bonus round, and this happens at 0:45 into the 3-minute highlights video you can check out below. On the 6th free spin we triggered the HyperHold feature, and we almost managed to fill the screen with cash coins. This gave us a pretty solid payout, and you see how it all played out by hitting the play button.
Review Summary
Adventures Of Doubloon Island follows in the footsteps of , but unfortunately it comes with a far weaker math model. The HyperHold feature is still at the heart of things, but the 2,000x (or 3,333x with Win Booster) max win is not all that impressive. The volatility has been rounded down to medium, but the 12,500x potential in the previous title is hard to forget when you duke it out in this follow-up effort.
Visually, the game is pretty well-done, but the pirate theme comes across as a bit too generic. Even the 4 jackpots are worth less in this game, but we understand that wants to provide a more casual alternative that caters to a different segment of players. We hardly expect this to be the last game in the HyperHold series, but we hope will return to form in their next release.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Optional Win Booster feature | Feels like a backwards step compared to Assassin Moon |
| HyperHold Strike Respins feature | |
| 4 fixed jackpots up to 2,000x (Win Booster: 3,333x) |
