The legendary Trojan War was first depicted in dactylic hexameter form in Homer’s classic poem, The Iliad. This is among the oldest texts in Western literature, but most players will probably be more familiar with the epic Hollywood depiction, Troy (2004), where Achilles is played by a ripped Brad Pitt. This slot version, simply called Achilles, is not a branded effort however, and it takes a humorous and cartoonish approach to the subject matter.

The semi-transparent 5x3 grid spins in front of the Walls of Troy, and main characters from the story, like the invading Greek King, Agamemnon, Helen of Troy (whose beauty famously “launched a thousand ships”), and Achilles himself play central roles in the game’s 4 random modifiers and 2 bonus games. The 4 premium character symbols pay between 12.5 and 20 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins, and the Achilles Wild pays 50x your stake for the same. The Bonus Rounds/Games also trigger when you land 3 bonus symbols on reels 1, 3 and 5, and the bonus symbol on reel 5 determines which feature is triggered:

• The Trojan Horse Bonus will have Greek soldiers line up to enter the Trojan Horse, and each soldier awards a prize. You can get up to 5 soldier prizes, and the max win of this feature is 40x your stake.
• The Empire Bonus allows you to pick a country from a world map, and the Greek army will then try to invade. If they are successful you win a prize, and this goes on until they are not. All prizes are then paid, and up to 60x your stake can be won in total.
• The Achilles Bonus Round gives you 10 free spins with extra wilds added to the reel strips. The wilds appear on reels 1 to 4, and they can be sticky for up to 3 spins. You get +1 free spin per bonus symbol you land on reel 5. Non-UK players can purchase the Free Spins round for 80x the stake.

The walls of Troy seen in the background strongly reminded us of the somewhat underrated Hollywood blockbuster, Troy (2004), with Brad Pitt as an unforgettable Achilles. However, this is more of a comedy than a serious historical drama, something the cartoonish visuals underscores. You can win up to 400x your stake outside of the 4 modifiers, and they certainly liven up the otherwise barebones base game when they trigger.

A screen full of wild reels awards 1,000x your stake, which is the most you can hope for in the base game. The animations you get are entertaining, sure, but the win cap on both bonus games are not exactly pulse raising. The Free Spins round can do damage to the tune of 5,248x your stake however, but the 80x price tag tells you all you need to know about the average returns. Overall, Achilles is a somewhat entertaining release.
